Good move by the Red Wings. He seems to be on the same page as I am.

That's like saying "The best way to cook a steak medium rare is to make sure it's cooked so that it's medium rare." |

How bout another one:
"The best way to make sure you're correctly calculating how many feet are in 3.2 miles is to make sure you know 5,280 feet are in a mile."
Babcock said "The best way to use advanced stats is to make sure the numbers are correct"

Maybe look further into how a player's Corsi number is actually determined. By it's very nature it's not accurate. That's what he is referring to in my opinion. It has nothing to do with knowing how many "feet are in a mile". |

Little known fact: there are 523 Corsi in a mile.
Sorry though. How silly of me. I should have known it doesn't have anything to do with my analogy since my analogies are pretty much always scoffed at by you.

You can have that opinion if you'd like. But if you know my stance on Corsi and some of the problems I have with it, you'd know that is not the case.

I never realized there was this much disdain for emrick. I don't love him but I don't get annoyed listening to him. I only hear him for national broadcasts though.
Who do people hate more emrick or buck? - PhillySportsGuy
Buck. It's like a robot calling the game, with his tone set to smug.
I enjoy Doc, although I think he's lost a couple MPH on the fastball |

I'll explain further. Exactly how many feet are in a mile is known. There is no debate there. It's cut and dry. When a player has a Corsi F rating of 52%, it isn't cut and dry. There's a bunch of false data that goes into forming that rating, that makes it not cut and dry. That is what I believe Mike Babcock is referring to when saying it's important that the numbers are accurate. And if teams can use the principle's of Corsi, and eliminate that false data as much as possible. Then it would become that much better of a statistic, and a far more accurate measure of a player.

There is nothing there that refutes false positives/negatives. It is impossible to do so. It is impossible to eliminate them from the equation. The article makes some good points, and really is about refuting the Nielsen numbers. But the article does nothing to refute the issue of false data. |

Corsi = Shot Attempts = Shots + Missed Shots + Blocked Shots
Fenwick = Shots + Missed Shots
Yep. There's just a (frank)ing Everest of false data in there. It's incredible, because who actually tracks those sorts of things during a game? |

Absolutely there is. If you're talking about a team number, then the issue of false data isn't there. With individual players, there is a lot of it. As much as 30-40% of it is false data. Same issue as +/-.
5 skaters are on the ice. They register 5 shot attempts for, and other team registers 3 shot attempts against them. All 5 players skate to the bench after the shift with a +2 in Corsi attempts for that shift. Anybody who watches the game knows that it's quite possible that a player can be on the ice for that shift, and have zero to do with any of it, or just part of it. One player can make the mistake that led to all 3 shot attempts against. But the other players are also punished for it. Same thing with +/-. A player can get a plus or a minus when it is not deserved. |

What you call false data is actually the off-puck stuff that Corsi/Fenwick captures better than any other stat. |
