As usual Bill, awesome article. I'm actually old enough to remember Stu Nahan doing the Flyers games, so I really appreciated your story. In thinking about it, my favorite Gene Hart "moment" is the last 10 minutes of the 1987 finals, game 6. From JJ's goal to Hexy out of the net in the last minute or so, and Gene's reaction, just classic.

The bumper wasn't strong enough, so after they floored it, the bumper ripped off the car. The robbers fled, but left the bumper there. Guess what was still attached to the bumper?"

Gene- AWESOME (And still missed.). Crazy thing is- at about the 7 minute mark of the third period, I started thinking I remembered a wild comeback tie in the waning seconds with a pulled goalie. Lifelong MacLeish fan, and a buddy loved the Rifle, so I started thinking I knew this game.

Didn't Gene work with Gary Dornhoffer at all in his last years in the booth? I was at a game at MSG with my son '93-95 time frame and we stopped by to chat with him, pre game. They were set up in a section of seats in the upper level preparing for the nights broadcast or possibly a pre game show. He was terrific, posed for pictures, asked where we lived in PA etc. Didn't tell him we were Ranger fans but I doubt it would have made any difference. Such a nice guy and that smile was infectious. Thought he was with Dorny but I guess it could have been Taylor. I will have to go search for the pictures. Loved listening to his broadcasts.

if you've never watched an old flyers game with hart calling the broadcast, you really should. 87 game 6 is a great one for that, but i'd look for something even earlier, from the 70s. the hockey will probably be lousy, but gene makes the whole thing entertaining. now i'm reminded of being subjected to coatsey for 2.5 hours a night.

Yes, Dorny did color commentary in Gene's final fee seasons on TV.

on the flip side, i grew up watching just as many rangers games, even though i hated them, because it was the only other hockey we could get on a regular basis back then, living at the shore, and have a fondness for sam rosen. still love listening to him call games. i got to meet him back in 2000 at a fundraiser for Ice Hockey in Harlem that i did a bunch of pro bono stuff for, got his autograph, and we chatted for a few minutes. very nice. i told him i was a flyers fan, but that i really enjoyed his work. super guy. sandy mccarthy, on the other hand, whom i also met that night, was a complete (frank)ing bumhole.
