nice thread and memories from everyone. I guess i'm the old coot here, my first memory was reading about their first 2 games (Oct. 1967) in the Inquirer, both loses on the west coast. the short column covered both games since they were out west and no one really knew who they were.
my first live game was their 2nd home game on 10-22-67 against the california golden seals, it was a 5-2 victory and our seats cost $2.00 in the upper deck behind the goal. the spectrum, with its partially assembled scoreboard was beautiful. it was the neatest place an 11 year old had ever been to. |

Some do, others recognize it as a handy tool to help evaluate teams and players. |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Saturday Quick Hits - bmeltzer
i've shared this before in here in bits and pieces i'm sure, but my first flyers memory was my first live nhl game. march 24, 1980 at the spectrum vs. the ny islanders. i was 7 years old. the game was just barely a month past the miracle on ice, which was my first exposure to the game at all. my dad had a businesss associate who lived in cherry hill, and had season tickets about 6 rows behind the flyers net, just to the left. i don't recall specifically if i was aware of the flyers before that night or not, but i assume so since my neighbor with whom i watched the olympics was a big rangers fan.
not surprisingly, the flyers lost that night 5-2, which i discovered years later was one of only two home losses they suffered the entire season, having gone 36-2-2 at the spectrum. i was also completely unaware of their 35 game unbeaten streak which had ended just a short time before.
i was a big football fan, but had never been to a professional sports event - and the experience was awe inspiring and overwhelming. i remember so many details from that night about the building, the fans, the sounds and smells (most of which were awful). my dad bought me a flyers puck, which i proudly showed off at school the next day. i was disappointed philadelphia lost that night, but i became an instant flyers fan and have never looked back. from that point through the end of my high school years my brother and i would get to about 5 games a year, and i particularly remember from the ages of around 10-15 actually getting depressed when the 3rd period started because it meant the game would soon be over and i wouldn't be back for a month or two or three, which was an eternity. if the flyers lost....forget it...the ride home was pure agony. i would be so upset. my poor dad...deserves a medal. |

That'd probably qualify as misuse of the stat, sure. Nobody here takes it to that extreme...also most of us here who use it for analysis realize that it does have it's limits. |

Yea understandable. Another reason it is daily argued is trying to defend the Tanner Glass signing since he was at the bottom of the league in Corsi last year. |

A lot of 4th liners are sporting bad possession numbers, my objection to Glass would be a purely visual one. I don't think he's a good player. He's got toughness, but he takes some dumb penalties and he's not an especially skilled guy, not somebody who can slide up and down if injury or other circumstance requires it.
Of course, he didn't really hurt the Pens during the regular season, and there's teams that made it deep with guys like him onboard. |

Yea I agree. I wouldn't mind him on a 1 year deal, it just drove me crazy they gave him 3 years. The Rangers signed him to replace Dorsett, and since they were able to turn Dorsett into a 3rd rounder, I guess the value isn't that bad. He is coming off a bad year. Just gotta hope for the best I guess. |

It's a familiar song here. We did the same with Jody Shelley, good guy worked hard, didn't really hurt or help the team, but 3 years at $1.1mm was not especially good asset management/cap value for him. I'm more annoyed at how it gets blown out of proportion, but it still wasn't a great contract.
Glass is probably a better player than Shelley, but it's a similar thing. |
