Yes, that was the real point. But not sure why you added above the quoted article that teams hiring ex players has to stop. That's false in my opinion. - MJL
Think I only said the parade needed to end... not sure that means no players whatsoever. |

Didn't you say that a guy with a working knowledge of the company's products would be helpful compared to no knowledge (all things equal)? - jmatchett383
I did not state all things being equal, just that it would be helpful for a CEO to intimately familiar with the product.

I think the point of the article posted is, that too often, former players are promoted into management roles and think the game as it was played in their days and are more resistant to change.
It's valid in some respects, invalid in others. It does generalize a bit much for my taste, but the underlying idea is that team's need to be open to new ideas and trends to avoid being left behind. Change is the only constant in the world.
That said it doesn't completely generalize. There's a lot of praise for Shanahan, a former player, for thinking outside the box. Other former players are embracing new ideas in Vancouver, Boston(where Cam Neely is team president) and Chicago where several former players are in key positions of power(Norm Maciver, for example).
I hope that it becomes the case in Philly, too, under Hextall. Adaptability is vital. If the Flyers didn't adapt to the Blues beating the poop out of them, they likely never win the Stanley Cup. |

Now you're just being a defensive wiener. Obviously, the thing in parenthesis was an aside I'd add.

With you there, driving in circles is not a sport. Now if they had to turn around and start going the other way at the mid point of the race, I might start watching. The accidents would be spectacular! - BiggE
I don't particularly watch Nascar but sometimes the faster lighter cars are pretty neat. They burst into flames for no apparent reason, go spinning out of control, etc. I find the courses which are more than a giant circle are much more fun to watch. Hairpin turns in a fiberglass box wrapped around an engine and a fuel tank at high speeds... |

The big deal was that he was played at left wing and performed horribly. Now, with Hartnell gone, it seems to be the best idea to remove the player that Giroux had chemistry with to force VL into a spot he's never played and have a big "?" on the left side. - jmatchett383
My impressions was that it was the best unkempt secret that vinny worst position was left wing.
so if you weren't willing to move jake down, why bring in vinny?
unless you wanted to put vinny at 2rw. But then there was no one on the second line to.feed him the puck?
hindsight I guess. |

It was a bad signing in general, kind of a shiny toy that the GM/coach could play with, but they didn't have the right size batteries to operate him. |

It seems obvious who is in a mood. I'm aware that you added the thing in parenthesis. And I was adding that was not part of my thinking in what I was saying. Next time we have a conversation, I'll try to have it more in line with your requirements, expectations, and guidelines of how the conversation should proceed.

So then why the big deal made by us, media, whomever about him moving to wing?
I don't know. I think I am trying to look for logic in all of this and forgetting that it's the flyers and logic doesn't exactly rule the day. - nails
The issue is that he was used on the left side. Sounds kind of dumb, but if you watch Vinny, he primarily likes to set up in the right wing side of the slot and fire away when the team is in the offensive zone. He gets a good look there being a lefty shooter and he's simply not as comfortable on the other side of the ice.
It's why my first two suggestions for Vinny(if he couldn't be traded) were RW with Giroux or centering Voracek. The other option would be to have two scoring lines, with Giroux, Schenn, Voracek and Simmonds being the key guys, and continue using Couturier & Read as a shut down unit and then putting Vinny on a line with guys like Bellemare, Raffl or Akeson and make the "fourth" line basically a 3rd scoring line, rather than another defensive line.
The hope would be that Raffl and/or Bellemare can handle the skating and two way play and that Vinny could provide offense and help the other two produce points. |

FWIW, there is more "physical/athletic competition" involved in figure skating (where you are trying to achieve victory) than things like golf or baseball. - jmatchett383
Baseball is a lot more physically demending than you think. Just the motion of throwing a baseball or swinging a bat is an incredibaly violent motion for the human body to handle. It's also one of the hardest sports to master in the world. |

I think the bottom line is that players are individuals, and can also be smart guys. And I don't think it's correct in stating that they are used to not thinking creatively or freelancing. They acted accordingly in a team structure because that was their job. I think it's false to assume that would be the same in a management position.

I dont know how anyone couldnt consider Motocros a sport. It is pretty well documented that most top motocross athletes combine the highest levels of endurance, strength and athletecism when tested. Again...that is in combination aof all 3.
Jump on a 450 4 stroke in 90+ degree temps and wrestle it around a track at speeds approaching 90mph through triple jumps, whoops and rutts and you may think differently. |
