It's surprising, because he was a smart player and he did a great job at Notre Dame. - Jsaquella
Yeah, don't want to damn him for having to toil under Burke and Nonis, but at the same time, we already have way more ex-Flyers/ex-players in management than we need already... they desperately need somebody who is capable of crossing the T's, dotting the I's, and being a strong advocate for steady as she goes... Rubber Stamp Hanrahan hasn't really provided any of that. |

So...because I can't hit a baseball, it is a sport?
I guess playing the clarinet is a sport.
Also, the things you mentioned are what happens like 1/20th of the time. The rest is either standing still or sitting on a bench. - jmatchett383
Err, think you're getting your argument confused.
Regarding the bench, it's the same with hockey. So, not a sport. Got it. |

I was there as a sounding board, but offered no real opinions, outside of "Jesus, that's a lot of money" - Jsaquella
Fortunately, both of us are saying, "Jesus, that's a lot of money." Well, unfortunately I suppose, but not as unfortunate as it could be. It'll be fun once we get there and enjoy the food, drinks, and drinks. |

Totally agree. It's hard to say what the decision making structure of these front offices look like. I don't think they are all the same. - johndewar
Exactly. In Philly, under Clarke, Holmgren ran the draft. Under Holmgren, assistant GM Barry Hanrahan was widely thought to be the capologist, while scouting director Chris Pryor runs the draft. In Toronto, both Poulin and Loiselle were asst GMs. |

Yeah...reading the whole content of the statement in question would clarify this.
Yes, they sit on a bench, at times. As opposed to spending 95% of the game standing still or sitting on a bench, |

I have a higher probability of hitting a homer off of clemens on roids than I would ever have of beating Phelps or Bolt in a race. - nails
But d00d, swinging a bat back and forth like 20 times a day is so hard d00d. I need 10 hours of sleep after that, so draining. |

It also didn't help in our case that her mom was involved. If we made the decisions without any outside opinions, we would have had the reception at a firehall, hiring a friend's blues band and the food would have been all Bar BQ.
Instead, we had the reception at a fancy restaurant, with a typical wedding band, wait service and a cocktail lounge with horse Dovers |

We were lucky. My parents gave us $5000, but didn't give any input into the planning. All they asked is that we enjoy ourselves, which we did. |

Yep, for all i know, Hanrahan's job is solely answering questions like this:
"Hey, Barry, how can we fit this bastard in?" |

I guess we're lucky in that regard. There's some parental input, but it's more about things like centerpieces and music, not so much upselling us on the big things. |

My mother in law had to pony up, otherwise I'd still be paying the wedding. As it was, I think we spent close to $10K ourselves, if not a bit more.
Basically, we said, if you want to run it, you're going to have to help pay for it. We had a set amount saved and that was it. We're pretty laid back and we don't do fancy all that often. I wasn't going into debt because my mother in law wanted fancy. |

I will, if we can agree that things like figure skating are as well. I was just stating that I have different criteria to define a "sport." |

Yep. We tried to argue, but ultimately said, here's what we are spending. If you want all this, you can have it, but we aren't footing the bill. |

It's like owning a boat. you can buy screws for 35 cents at Lowe's. Throw the word nautical in front and the same screw costs $1.35 |

Yeah, our parents didn't really care. My mom was bummed that the pastor didn't get all dressed up in his wizard robes or whatever it is they wear, but we asked him not to, and didn't know she cared. |

I definitely waffle on the topic.
Defining what is a game of skill vs an athletic competition is difficult |

Yeah, cause that's all baseball players do, just like the vast majority of hockey players skate around without the puck for less than 1/3 of total game time therefore they spend most of the time on the bench or gliding around, so it's not a sport.
