After serving as an assistant coach in Pittsburgh until 1997, he took a similar position with the Colorado Avalanche, where he won his seventh career Stanley Cup in 2001. He was named as head coach of the New York Rangers in 2002, much to the ire of Islander fans. I can't remember the last time teams were fighting over assistant coaches to hire them as assistants

They have some good prospects that are in their system . He left another position to come here . Granted it was the Islanders . But it is not like he was homeless standing in a soup line .

Good question. Assistants dont get paid much and do a lot of work.
