Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Analytics, Alderson, Markov and More

i normally would say, "great blob, bill", but i don't even have to scroll down to know that there's a hatfield/mccoy argument below that will drag on for pages over advanced stats....sooooooo........thanks. a lot.

hard to believe markov is only 38. i kind of felt like he was 35ish when he got traded to philly 10 years ago. he just seemed older to me. i've said it before, and i'll say it again - he provided 2 of the best moments in the 04 run. the first was his series winning goal on brodeur which was almost a carbon copy of lemieux's goal in 95 except he wristed the puck. and the other was when he kissed and practically squeezed primeau to death on the game 6 tying goal against tampa. these are 2 my favorite flyers moments of all-time...not just that run. anyway...i wished he had returned to philly after the lockout. knowing what williams has accomplished for other teams, and we got such little time with markov, it's tough to swallow. if they had won the cup in 04 (which they should have), it would be a lot easier.

bruce hoffort...lake superior state, ncaa champion....and he faded into oblivion rather quickly.

and oh yeah...bump from last night: rughead and packard:

if he did become an FA what type of salary do you think he would've gotten? serious question. just curious how much you feel he's overpaid by
- Crimsoninja

He may have gotten a similar contract to what he signed here. I'm not a fan of overpaying for mediocrity. Let other teams do it.

Even though Hextall hasn't added many pieces this offseason, I'm ok with what he's done thus far. Having limited cap space ties his hands. The Hartnell/Umberger deal is probably going to be a lateral type move. What you lose in goal scoring you gain in defensive play and discipline. If Umberger can stay healthy I think he might be able to score 15 goals or so too.

If Wiki is to be believed, he's still toiling in the KHL.

With the Cup drought approaching 4 decades, kind of hard to swallow that they aren't a contender. But it is what it is. Hopefully Hextall can stay away from handing out long term deals at crazy money for marginal guys, and not deal draft picks like they are trading cards. If that happens, they will be headed in the right direction.
- PLindbergh31

LOL, I was talking bout the Isles!
I see the Flyers with 93-98 points and a playoff spot, or worst case, just missing by a hair.

Wow, I had some great times too during parts of that decade

And some were worthy of brain washing to forget.

And of course 2 fixed cups involving the Flyers losing

Can anyone say 3 illegal goals in game 6 1980 and a team with coke heads/potential obstruction of justice in 1987

That might be a tad optimistic, but who knows. I don't think the Flyers are a contending team like the Boston's. LA's. Chicago's of the world.

So, going completely off topic for a bit: Will Cole Hamels be a Dodger by tomorrow afternoon? and, if so, will Rube the boob find a way to get swindled on the deal?

I'm thinking
1. Slight, but possible, chance
2. Well, duh, it's Amaro ain't it?

I agree, not a contender, but I think they have enough weapons and are solid enough in net to get in.

Pretty much, maybe they win a round if Mason gets red hot, but I think final 8 is as far as they will go. I do, though, believe they are moving in the right direction.

The Flyers didn't play well at all against the Rags and Mason missed a good part of the series and they managed to get to a game 7. I wouldn't say that's fodder. Boston is still the class of the East imo.

Wouldn't surprise me either way to be honest. They could get in and win a round or even two depending on matchups, and they could miss altogether. So many variables.
