It's just interesting to look at the stats. Spaling had more points in less games, had better possession #s, all while playing on a worse team. It just seems like they are very similar, but people are upset at giving Spaling 2.2M, and are ready to give Sutter 3.2M - cap1681
I mean who knows. I really dont think Sutter will want to settle at $3.2 even though thats the MAX we can give. Sutter is going to want more or be forced to take a 1 year deal. Either way, it seems this could be a problem. |

The difference here is that Spaling got time with Hornqvist (at times) and Smith. They ain't no Glass or Pyatt. - Barnaby36
He played with Legwand and Stalberg mostly, according to advance stats. Sutter's most common linemates were Gibbons and Adams. |

2 years, $3.3M is very good for someone with his skillset. He'll get it done.

Honest question, does Sutter bring more to the table than Spaling?? - cap1681
No he doesn't, Sutter will never be on a Stanley Cup winning team. |

Yes, I fixed that but Stalberg is a Team Sweeden product and Smith played for Team USA, I think...+ Legwand.
Gibbons/Adams/Glass/Pyatt all had time in the 3rd line at some point. |

Interesting theory, what exactly is his skill set?
Speed? no, Tenacious worker? no, Awesome shot? no, Great net front? no, fantastic forechecker? no, effective board play? no, Strong on the puck? no, heavy hitter? no, shut down nagging center like Dubi? no, ooooo wait he is tall and his last name is Sutter. |

So I plugged it into capgeek...with Megna in the lineup we BARELY fit under the cap....and thats assuming we get Sutter for no more than $3.25M.

Barts don't get us started. I remember talking to Killian about how well Sutter started to play and how you were upset about that. |

I'm over worrying about the numbers for Spaling and Sutter. Just get them signed and see how they play this year and you can adjust after. |

May have been a worse team but he was with better line mates....much better than Sutter's. |

Penguins' fans on twitter confuse me sometimes
Last year - "Our bottom 6 is horrible"
This summer - "Why are we spending so much on 3rd line players?"

bi-polar disorder.
The truth is we had a chance to bring Kulemin/Grabovski and passed that. They'd have been great signings. Off course Sutter would have to be traded. |

This is interesting... Tiops (FWIW) is saying Sutter is being prodded by his agent to only take a one year deal to get him to UFA.
If Sutter is dead set on being an UFA next year, they should just trade him now. I'm not a fan of letting players with value (Bartley's opinion aside) walk for nothing. |

Always something to complain about. Before the season starts my brother and I always try to guess who the most hated (for no reason) player will be throughout the year. No matter what there is always that player that can do no right in the eyes of fans. |

I mean...I get your point...but there's a difference between improving and overpaying.
Some writers I've read and people around the league think Sutter could bring back quite a bit in a trade. I'll take it with a grain of salt but if we can move him for something decent (not just a salary dump) then we should do it. If not, then we slightly overpay and keep him.
Its easy to say trade him for picks/prospects but they would have to be significant enough to warrant the trade. |

That's a big "if"...but IF he is truly set on being a UFA...then yes, trade him. sign him now for a few years or get rid of him. No way we should keep him after this season if he hits the open market at $4.5-5.5M anyway.
I couldn't agree more, lock up the guys you want because I hate letting guys walk for nothing. Sutter and Martin as a package deal right now would net us something nice...I just don't know what. |

No, there are plenty of reasons to hate on those two. This guess is restricted for players that are hated for no reason (ex: Dupuis(NH), Sutter(...)) haha |

Well I'm going out on a limb and going with Bennett. If he gets injured again people will flip their poop. Guess the injury history would be a reason damn it |

Ideally, you improve the players on the bottom 6 at a similar price to those you are replace or just general good value. So Goc, Comeau, Downie signings were all means of improving on Glass, Pyatt, etc without paying more. JR made some great strides in that department
I get that its hard to have your cake and eat it too, but I think its valid for people to complain about given that we could use $5.5M on something better than Sutter and Spaling.
If they make this all work with the cap AND Spaling turns out to be a competent, every day 3rd line player....then I have no problem with it. |

HEY I have valid reasons for not wanting dupes in top 6... and thats bc he isn't top 6... and I blame DB... I have full faith he will be on 3rd line and will help the team that way and this will let guys like BB and maybe even kap get top mins with the best players...
Let the kids play... |
