It's called arbitration. By electing a 1 year term he's eligible for arbitration gain next year. Meaning he'll get another raise.

Money just getting thrown around like it's nothing in this league nowadays. subban is talented, but 8.5 million for a defenseman who still struggles in his own end is a joke. plus hes a b1tch |

you think 7.5 for a 8 year term would solve this mess for montreal i think subban would take it. |

he'd be the first defenseman ever to be paid 9 million a year, so how does the market already say he should get it? - jimbro83
Yes, but Weber makes like $24mil a year right now because of his pre-CBA contract. He'd have the biggest cap hit, but not be the highest paid. |

This is painfull to read though... I honestly don't think half the people commenting on here understand how arbitration and negotiating work. Bergiven doesn't believe for one second he is going to sign Subban anywhere near 5 mil, if he offered what he actually thought was fair he would end up waaaaaaay over paying. Pretty sure Nashville offered Weber 4.something a few years ago, that's how it works. In the actual negotiations Bergiven is probably offering 7-8 mil over 8 years and Subban is probably asking 9-10. We will find out by the end of the night when they agree to an amount. |

Misspelt another french name, my bad... And he's offering 5.25m for 1 year in arbitration knowing that if it comes down to that Subban will be awarded somewhere in the middle of 5.25 and 8.5. Really not that hard to understand.... |

Generally in contract negotiations the first offer by the team is blindly accepted, so frankly I think PK is just plain rude. |
