I fully realize that, but from the organization's perspective the idea of starting at $5M as "a negotiation number" is unrealistic.
If PK only has 2 years of RFA status remaining, then at this point Habs fans should be very afraid of a 2yr deal that takes PK to UFA.
Has the organization learned it's lesson from a couple years ago? We shall see... - As_I_See_It

Habs almost beat Rags with a AHL goalie. Then Rags got spanked in the finals. Price makes a difference every time he plays. If you don't see that you are blind.
Anyways, deal will get done with the Habs and all will be forgotten. - SmielmaN
It's insulting to Tokaski to say he was the reason we lost. The kid was incredible. The rest of the team didn't show up, maybe it was because they spent it all against Boston, who knows. Point is the team would have had the same problems scoring goals if Price was healthy. |

I think they'd trade him before letting him walk for nothing. |

Deal will be done tomorrow, 8 years around 8.5M$ cap hit. No way this thing reaches arbitration. |

To an extent both of you are correct
The d would have played differently with price in net as he is a better puck handler and the number of goals that went in on mtl dmen who were collapsing back onto toker |

You really don't understand right? The team opted for a 1 year deal at arbitration, there is no 2 year deal. |

The clear difference is that pk will deliver on his long term deal
The only sticking that will be happening is dion sticking it to the leafs over the next 7 years to the tune of 49M - MTL1
yeah the extra 500,000 we have to pay Dion with a cap that went up 5 million is gonna cripple us. |

You know exactly what I'm talking about.
How nice would it have been for MTL to sign PK a couple years ago to a 10 year $50M deal? Instead they bridged it and are now regretting it. |

It's only fair!
But be careful with your comments, you are a Leafs fan and apparently that means your opinion doesn't matter.
Also, the Rangers would have owned Montreal even if Price was in. Unless Price started scoring goals. |

I think they let him play a few mins in one of the games, so he could get a medal.
edit: yeah they let him play 11 mins against Austria in a prelim. |

Hilarious that a blog is written saying Subban is looking for $8,.5 million a year......fallacy. Show me one place where Subban's camp said they are looking for $8.5 million a year?
What has been reported is that Subban is looking to make $8.5 next year on a 1 year deal. Very different.
Nowhere has anyone reported what Subban is asking for on a 2 year or 4 year or even 8 year deal. What he is saying is that next year on a one year deal I want to be the highest paid D-men in the league making $800k more than Shea Weber.
So if he thinks he should be making almost $1 million more than any D man next year then what do you think his price is on a long term. My guess is somewhere around $80-85 million over 8 years. |

Even with the cap going up, it is too much money for a 2nd pairing defenseman. I don't think he is a bad defenseman but paying him and playing him as a top pairing defenseman is just wrong. |

I don't think it's you that understands...if they opt to the 1 year arbitration figure he becomes an UFA at season's end...they will try and sign the 2 year deal to give them time to see what direction this team will be headed and enough time to move him for assets. If he signs a 1 year deal, they will be forced to trade him at the deadline. this will not go to arbitration. |

and what about when PK subban is making 13 million as a 32 year old?
Maybe he will start worrying about actually playing D and his numbers will take a dive a-la Doughty, Mike Green or the much heralded Phaneuf |

Salary cap was going down that season, remember? I think the bridge contract was a good thing...and PK was surely asking for more than 5M$ a year.
I think they were probably unsure about giving him a long term contract at that time, new management in place, and PK was not the player he is today back then. He really matured a lot in the last two years, as both a player and an individual.
