I think they let him play a few mins in one of the games, so he could get a medal.

edit: yeah they let him play 11 mins against Austria in a prelim.

- GardinerExpress

My point is: He made team Canada and played.

Once again EK is full of it...

I don't think it's you that understands...if they opt to the 1 year arbitration figure he becomes an UFA at season's end...they will try and sign the 2 year deal to give them time to see what direction this team will be headed and enough time to move him for assets. If he signs a 1 year deal, they will be forced to trade him at the deadline. this will not go to arbitration.
- Kinggilmour

No he's an RFA in 1 year... So again it's you that doesn't understand.

No. 1 year deal means he is still RFA at the end of the term. 2 year deal would have meant UFA. Big difference because a on year deal means Habs own the chips next year and can offer a deal with term because Subban won't be able to bring them to arbitration.

Subban can of course decide for 1 year only at which point he'd sit until an agreement could be made but that's over thinking for sure.

and what about when PK subban is making 13 million as a 32 year old?

Maybe he will start worrying about actually playing D and his numbers will take a dive a-la Doughty, Mike Green or the much heralded Phaneuf

Even with the cap going up, it is too much money for a 2nd pairing defenseman. I don't think he is a bad defenseman but paying him and playing him as a top pairing defenseman is just wrong.
- habfanforever

You can call him a 2nd pairing defenseman all you want, but he isn't. You know why?! Because he's Toronto's best d-man. Therefore, he's a first pairing d-man. See the correlation I'm making here: a guy who plays on the first pairing is a first pairing d-man.

I'm not saying that Toronto's D is any good (it surely isn't), but you pay your best guy at the position more because if he's not there, you're a lot worse.

He played with a guy that will be on the 3rd pairing of a good team. Phaneuf was pretty good during the lockout season, and was damn good until he wore out down the stretch when the leafs tanked. I'd like to see what he can do with 23 mins a night max

not if they sign the 1 year arbitration...read the 2012 NHL collective bargaining agreement. After a player signs their 3 professional contract they become UFA's

Salary cap was going down that season, remember? I think the bridge contract was a good thing...and PK was surely asking for more than 5M$ a year.

I think they were probably unsure about giving him a long term contract at that time, new management in place, and PK was not the player he is today back then. He really matured a lot in the last two years, as both a player and an individual.

- stinger67

This is where I keep getting lost. Everyone says they should have signed him to a long-term deal worth $5mil a year, but wasn't he asking for over $6mil? I may be remembering wrong. I think if they could have signed him long-term for $5mil they probably would have done it...

Didn't know PK didn't play for team Canada at the Olympics....

- WaterBoy

ya, i'm not so worried about that, it's true he only played 1 game. What makes this blog unreadable is the simple grammatical and spelling errors. And sentences like this:
Many can handle that kind of workload because they are defenseman and they have the ability to play a controlled game using there and it utilizing their energy in short spurts.

C'mon Ek! I'll edit your blogs for free, it'll take me 5 mins each time, PM me if interested

Where did he finish in Norris voting this season and how many mins did Canada let him play? I seem to have forgotten.

fine Subban will be making 9 mil a year well into his 30's. thats if he doesnt go to arbitration. I cant believe this guy is gonna be the highest pair D man in the league, because he is probably top 15, at best a top 10 d-man.

I guess what I'm trying to say is if Dion had a true #1 ahead of him on defense depth chart, he'd be more effective and thus, worth more. Still 7 mil is too much even if he's the best you got on D.

I wanna play!

A) tied for 14th
B) 11 total mins during the tournament (8th of 8 d-men on Canada)

Again, the organization rolled the dice and lost. Nobody could have foreseen what PK would go on to do over the course of his bridge deal, but the fact is that he far exceeded all expectations.

PK KNOWS that he can be the highest paid d-man in NHL history... Why would he settle for anything less? Would you? I certainly wouldn't!
