I'm going to go off the board a little, not because he isn't recognized as an elite/impact player, but because I don't think the average guy on the street recognizes just how good he is: Erik Karlsson.
Man, I'm telling you, that guy is a flat-out beast. He competes defensively, but I freely admit that he isn't close to elite at that aspect of his game. He's league average, at his position, defensively.
But oh, my gosh. Offensively, that guy is one of the best I've seen. His skating, offensive IQ and skillset are flat-out amazing. He's just a monster out there. |

Yeah, filthy.
Plays near-Selke level defense, too. Really respected by his teammates. |

Rico was my hero after Mark Howe
People ragged on him at the end of his career but he gave us a lot of great years. Not big just effective
I miss having a guy like that.Even made Chris Therien a plus player - Steelmanpa
Loved having Rico on the team....even at the end, he was still not bad.
Everytime I think of Desjardins, I think of that time when Clarke stripped the captaincy from Lindros and gave it to Rico and Claude Lemieux (according to a Rick Tocchet story) asked Rico during a game if the "C" on his jersey stood for "selfish". |

Great pick. He will get to 1000 points early this season and possibly 500 goals. He has quietly put up a HOF career.

Crazy to think about a guy like Hossa is the 5th or 6th banana on that Chicago team. |

He's going to finish with quite a resume. 4 Finals appearances, 2 Cups, well over 1000 points and 500 goals along with being a terrific defensive forward. |

I was very happy when he left the Pens after that short stint with them.
I think Pitt would have won another cup if Hossa stayed there.
Im serious about this, Crosby with Hossa was scary. |

Maybe. They won the next year while playing against him, so it's tough to tell. The Pens really haven't been that close since they won the cup. |

Best St. Louis skater in their playoffs last season.
Just like Voracek was the best skater for the Flyers vs NYRs, both underrated. |

So they will only be able to resign one of them? - Feanor
Pretty much. All three are good players.
And if they trade sharp while non compliant the return won't be much better than when they traded Ladd, Buff, etc.... Or when we dealt Gagne. Other teams know they need to be compliant and will leverage that.
It'll be interesting. |

As long as folks keep putting Toews, Crosby, Stamkos, and Getzlaf ahead of him I think he is being underrated.
He'd be the forward I'd pick to build a team around. |

Alex Ovechkin will never be confused with Steve Yzerman. That's laughable. - mayorofangrytown
You're right, he won't. But obviously by the fact that I've been criticizing Ovenckin's all around game, I'm not comparing him. Just using Yzerman as an example of how a one dimensional player remade his game. So there is no excuse for Ovechkin not getting better all around and paying more attention to defensive detail. |

In a perfect world, he would improve the rest of his game while not losing one iota of goal production... but it's not imperative.
Guys like Kovalev, Mogilny, Coffee, Pat Kane, and Brett Hull all managed to win Cup rings while cheating up the ice and camping in soft spots with ridiculous frequency... their GM's just did a better job of building a team around them. GMGM has done OV no favors. - Tomahawk
I disagree. It is absolutely imperative that Ovechkin improves his all around game, along with the rest of the team.
Mogilny by the way was a very strong two way player. He was a very good defensive winger in the later stages of hs career. |
