I miss those days of depth
Vanek was like +47 with over 40 goals bouncing around the 2nd and 3rd lines in '07. Sure, he had crazy PP time, but that's impressive - LetsGoBuffalo75
I miss the days of depth as well. When I would watch a game and just know that they would score another goal. |

Eh, Briere was 2x the offensive threat Drury was though.
Drury is a legend in Buffalo, he gets talked about as if he were a HOF'er.
Either way I agree on Briere not being a legit #1 - sbroads24
I had actually said during the 2007 season (not here, as I was not a member yet), that the Sabres should make their priority to sign Briere over Drury, and that he'd be missed more than Drury was. |

One or the other would not have made a difference, IMO. They caught lightning in a bottle and then it began to change. |

Briere and Drury were never the same players after they left. |

When Briere left, they really didn't have much in the way of a playmaking center. They wouldn't have been as great of a team as they were in 2006 and 2007, but from 2008 on, they would have been comfortably in the playoffs. |

The 05-06 team was the best. The playoffs were so much fun.
06-07 it was cup or bust.... And as all Lindy Ruff teams do...They busted |

I don't know. The argument is to be strong down the middle and having one of the two without the other would not have worked, IMO. |

Agreed. Briere, Connolly and Roy were essentially the same player. They just all had flaws. Briere was getting older, Connolly was injured and Roy liked fat chicks |

It was a great team. Players who we say suck were very successful with their rolls in that team. Players we say were great on that team did not succeed on other teams. The Connoly injury may have cost the Sabres a cup. |

This.
Guy obviously sucks
Might as well write off the next 5 years. No point in even watching the team. 10 games of NFL experience, and he's already a bust.

Fun fact, Roy and Breire have the same amount of 70+ point seasons.
If Roy were in his prime and Briere were just a rookie, Roy would have had the 90 point season in 07 IMO |

okay i see your point. Although ill have to say mckee going down in 05-06 was the bigger loss at what i think our closest chance to a cup. no doubt in my mind if our defense was healthy we would have crushed it in the cup |

Roy had the best contract that could ever be possible. 70+ points for 4 million.. |

agree to disagree. i dont really think at any point in roys career did he even come close to the skill briere had in that season. |

Don't get me wrong, he was never a #1 center either but he at one point was top 20 in the league in scoring |

That was the year Connolly went down, but yes, agreed, it was a mess at that point. |
