What your describing isn't a rebuild. It's call smart management of a team. Sure we should draft more wingers but the team isn't dying for wingers within it's system because the wingers we have playing for us are in their early to mid 20's, while entering their prime. Our defense is questionable but still an NHL level defense. There is nothing wrong with what we have but therei is nothing wrong with stalk piling for tomorrow. Wingers on the other hand are much easier to come by the puck moving top level defenseman. That's why we're drafting the way we are.
All of this however doesn't tell me why you think the Hartnell for Umberger screams rebuild though. - SuperSchennBros
I call Hartnell for Umberger dumping a long contract that would have handcuffed the team in a couple of years in exchange for Umberger (with a much shorter deal as you know) freedom to make moves in the nearer future. That's it.
And as I'm sure you read further, my definition of a rebuild might be a little different with this team in particular. I think they can be a playoff team for the next couple of years simply because they have some decent talent, and the East is kinda watery. I don't think they will necessarily stink on ice unless the injury bug bites them.
I think they're gonna add bits and pieces over the next year or two, try to shed a few contracts (eg, Hartsy), and then take a big swing when their defensive prospects are up and running. Not to mention, I'm looking forward to how Hextall continues to draft. I think it'll be another key. I like the Sanheim pick.
Sound good? |

meh, 14th forward. Won't kill us. Probably spends most of the time as a Phantom and can be called up as an emergency.
Better be a big emergency.
I don't think anyone is a fan of it, but it's certainly not a back breaker. |

I think you have a good grasp and the same grasp as fans and possibly the organization but I don't think "rebuild" is the right choice in words to call it. Change in philosophy, sure. Rebuild, I don't know about that.
The Flyers future was bright a year ago, it's just more bright now. However I think I liked our chances at a Cup going into last season then this one. I could be wrong because this team isn't all that much different from last season. I just don't think dividing Hartnell and Timonen for Umberger and Del Zotto makes us better. However, you have to play the games and a lot could change in 8 months.
At this point I'd like the be rid of Umberger and Lecavalier's deals. I'd also like to be in on Bobby Ryan or any young top line winger to play with Giroux now that Hartnell is gone. |

I don't like POS anywhere in the club. And I plan on going to more phantoms games but not to watch him. Oh well |

yeah, perhaps retool is better than rebuild, but you know the negative connotation that word brings. people cringe. I thought I'd get more flack for using that word than the one I did.
I see a good future with these pieces. I'm just trying to remain patient and I understand Hextall needs to get his philosophy going for a couple of seasons before it takes off.
Remaining patient is something Homer couldn't grasp, and although he made the playoffs rather consistently, after awhile I just felt like he was shooting from the hip to make a team that appeared "good enough". Not great. Good enough. Won games. Filled seats. Made Ed happy.
They almost pulled it off a few years back, but in hindsight, man that was a hell of a lucky run, y'know?
When I think of "retooling", I think of Homer. I'd prefer to leave that in the past and look forward. I think Hextall has the potential to do the job better. |

Ryan White played 52 games in the NHL last season. I'm not seeing minor league stats anywhere. Sure he might play for the Phantoms at some point but this signing tells me (just me) that Scott Laughton could start the season in the AHL. |

I think Laughton will start in the AHL, too, but I still don't think White cracks the lineup too often. Maybe as a healthy scratch. |

4th line possibilities - White, Rinaldo, Akeson, Rosehill
who ya got?
I'm all for finding a replacement for Rinaldo's role, but I was hoping it would be a guy with a little talent, and not more of the same. |

I thought in 2010 we were a very good team. Maybe it was talent, maybe it was luck, maybe it was a bit of both. Our top four defense was that good but our third pair was that bad. We still managed to get by even with key players being out due to injuries at times (Carter, Gagne, Laperriere).
I didn't think Homer was that bad a GM. It takes a lot of guts to make the deals that he did. Richards and Carter were corner stone players. He promised us a hammer and brought in Pronger. Briere was unstoppable in the playoffs. Hartnell, Timonen, the Coburn deal was a steal. Richards, Carter, Lupul, Coburn, Carle, Hartnell, Umberger and Upshall were all young when they were brought in with high upsides. |
