Last season ,s beatdown on our young defense was a good thing imho .It embarassed them ,and they will be better for it .The coach will have their undivided attention ,and will learn from their mistakes .I predict that a top 4 of Methot /EK and Cowen/Ceci will become one of the best in the east before too long |

Here's the roster I'd do if possible...
I traded Phillips to EDM, Greening to NSH and got Sharp for Dal 2nd, Wilkstrad and Prince - riceroni
pretty sure chicago would laugh at murray if that was the offer for sharp. the guy is almost a ppg winger with good 2-way ability.....you aren't getting him for scraps

Chicago would want Smith. They need a stronger physical presence in the middle. I believe Smith plus a second would get Sharp. |

Ya, Ok, so let's say we traded Smith + 2nd and then we have Lazar on the 4th L C. It would make our 4th line pretty weak in my opinion but I'd still do that trade... |

What's the problem... we ice a sh1tty D next season and if everything falls apart then we have a legit shot at McDavid... Maybe the 'plan' all along for the organization was to be as bad as possible next year and really hit a home run in the draft a la Pittsburgh in the early 2000's.
Would any of you trade 2-3 seasons of crap teams spending near the bottom of the NHL salary cap for a legit shot at being a top contender in 5 years with another one of the faces of the NHL on your roster? - riceroni
That doesn't always work.
See: Edmonton with 5 top 5 picks, NYI with Johnny T. |

1. Bobby Ryan.... He's in a contract year and coming off an injury. He needs to get paid!
2. Cowen.... I think he will actually really come into his own this year and establish himself as a legit T4 D man.
3. Hoffman.... I think he will grab a spot on L2 and pop in 20 goals and also be on the point for the PP and use his quick feet and decent shot to help run it with EK. - riceroni
This would be so, so good. |

Problem is other teams would offer up a Smith type player, another cheap roster piece, and a prosect and a first for Sharp.
The guy isn't Spezza, he's locked into a fair deal and can be a leader on a team that needs one. I think Edmonton would pay a high price for a guy like Sharp if given the chance. |

They will need a 1st rounder to even the value then. Sharp is still a top 30 player in this league. |

Mike Zibanejad.
Mark Stone. Although I have a problem with this question. I don't think if these players perform well that it will be a surprise. Other than Boro, all these guys are expected to make some noise. |

Sharp is still a top 30 player in this league. - Gord_Wilson_2.0 Yep i get that, he is also playing on a team that sits 2.2 mil above the cap ,they want good cheap bottom 6 guys ,one big need is a bottom 6 center .Zsmith fits what they are looking for to a tee,is he worth a Sharp realistically no.But i didnt see Neal getting moved for lessor players either

Sometimes we lose perspective of the possible. Smith has a great contract at $1.9m. Not sure why people are so quick to discount his value to a team like the Hawks. They have serious short term cap pressures. A guy like Smith plays real strong in the playoffs. He would slot in real nice as the third line center for the Hawks.
Hard for people to understand that the cap creates a value added situation when you have a player on a great contract. What Chicago needs is to move a $5.9m salary and avoid taking back a lot of salary but get something that helps them now. Their problem is cap space and size in the middle. They cannot compete with all the teams in the West that have loaded up at the center position.

Some of these posts demonstrate how silly fans actually are. Yes, Smith could be a very nice fit on Chicago. However, if Sharp is the target moved, then I'm sorry, people are out to lunch to think Sharp for Smith plus a mid-ranged pick and/or scrub player gets done. A 1st rounder or decent prospect will have to be involved as well. The cap argument is fair, but you aren't trading a top 30 NHL player for a 3rd/4th line centre. Chicago didn't get this good by making awful deals. They always have a plan to replace somebody that they loose. That starts by draft picks and prospects. |

I think you're right, in that Smith might be a good fit with CHI. Our problem is that they want to shed cap, and OTT doesn't want to add salary. Although Sharp or Leddy would make this team better, I don't think there's any way a trade between these teams will work. |

I do not disagree with anything you say other than your discounting the value of Smith. This guy has a whole bunch of years left on his career. He could have made a difference to Chicago against LA. Now all the teams in the West have loaded up at center. Chicago needs to get better in the middle.
Tell me who is the better fit than Smith at that price.

Also have to remember Sharp has a no trade contract. Hawks don't want to move him to a Western contender. He will not likely go to a team unless he believes they have a reasonable shot at making the playoffs.
So, how many teams in the East that have cap space ($5.9m), a shot at the playoffs and have a good physical center on a good contract going back. Ottawa and Smith is a great fit for a Sharp trade. |

I'm not saying he wouldn't look nice in their bottom 6. I am saying two things now I guess. First, it's absurd to think removing a top 6 player for a bottom 6 player and say they would have beaten LA. Second, it's highly unlikely you see Smith and just spare parts moved for a guy like Sharp.
Smith has been an underwhelming player ever since he was concussed a year or two ago. |

Not in the opinion of the Senators or Paul MacLean. Clearly you place a much lower value on Smith than what some others do. |
