Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Brind'Amour, Prospect Updates - bmeltzer
brind'amour is one of all-time favorites, and in fact, is only 1 of 2 non-goalie jerseys i have. i loathed the trade at the time, but came to appreciate the player primeau became in philadelphia. both players are highly regarded here, and unfortunately we never got a cup out of either player. i really enjoyed the fan acknowledgement of brindy at the draft this past june, and you can tell he appreciated it and still has a very soft spot for the fans (and perhaps the organization as well).
ie, sanheim/morin, part of me wishes it was 5 years from now as we'd be preparing for the season with hopefully a very nice d-corps and be done with the waiting for our troops to arrive.

Sigh
That '04 squad was so franking close. If either Desjardins or Johnsson had been not been injured....

Good list!
It will always be a reflection of whatever era you grew up in, IMO. As I grew up in the 70s, the Bullies will always be my faves |

Your turn! - BiggE
1. Simon Gagne - My first "favorite flyer" after I was old enough to start understanding the game. 2010 vs Boston will always stand out for me with Gagne
2. Daniel Briere - Scored alot of clutch goals for Philly. Two wins away from having earned himself a Conn Smythe in 2010. One of my favorite Briere moments was when he scored a hat trick against montreal with the fans booing him every time he touched the puck
3. Eric Lindros - The main reason im a Flyers' fan today. Got an 88 jersey for my 10th birthday. Was too young to understand or know of all the behind the scenes drama that surrounded him. Would have loved it for him to have hosited a cup
4. Kimmo Timonen - If you lookup "Warrior" in the dictionary, there will be a picture of Timonen smiling back at you. Really hope his career isnt over, but for his sake I would more than understand if it is.
5. Bernie Parent - I wasnt even close to being born when the flyers won their cups, but ive seen/read enough about those years to know how much Bernie meant to those teams and how amazing he truely was
6. Chris Pronger - What a beast he could be in the short time he played for Philly.
It seems to take a long time for a team to recover from losing Pronger. Skill, fear, heart, experience and even whit can be used to describe Prongs
7. Claude Giroux - Would love to see G play his entire career for philly. This current team seems to follow by his example, but hopefully that doesnt translate to butt grabbing. "The Shift" against pittsburgh should be his playoff standard for years to come
8. Bobby Clarke - Clarkie would be much higher on my list if I was around to see him play. The side of Clarke I grew up to was the one fueding with Lindros, but watching old highlights you can really see what he was willing to give to the the game and how much heart he had playing
9. Peter Forsberg - As much of an 88 fan that I was, I hate the thought that Forsberg was part of the deal to acquire Lindros.. Seeing an injury ridden Forberg still dominate games for Philly can only make me think of what might have been if Lindros and Forsberg could have been on the same team in their primes
10. Ron Hextall - Really what the team needed after Lindburgh's death, he deserved that cup in 87. Still shocks me he was also thrown in the deal for Lindros.

i know. it still sticks in my craw. i loved that group. it wasn't just desjardins and johnsson (who of course got hurt in the waning minutes of game 5 vs. the (frank)ing devils) that were injured. they lost ragnarsson early in the tampa series, which was a huge loss, and i suspect malakhov also was playing through a concussion (i forget which series - toronto or tampa). having therien or weinrich probably would have been enough to get them through. timander was a bubble player, and seidenberg was an untrusted rookie.
jfc, this makes me so (frank)ing mad. |

Man.. Looking back I would give up Brind'Amour in a second if it meant keeping Foppa.. I don't think you can be a Flyers fan and not respect everything that Brind'Amour gave to the Orange and Black. Even though I was only watching the draft on TV i was clapping at home like everyone else when he came to the podium. That being said, Peter Forsberg is one of the all time greats in the game and to have had him in is prime would have been amazing..
TOP 10 FOR ME
1. Lindros (those years where he was healthy and on were unlike anything I had ever seen in hockey. He could and would go through, over , around , between or past any player with a mean streak that could intimidate. Hell when i watch the clips of that hit on Dackell I swear you can hear a train coming down the tracks as Lindros approaches him)
2. Giroux
3. Poulin
4. Kerr
5. Howe
6. Desjardins
7. Renberg
8. Leclair
9. Pronger (he was at the tail end of being the best but was still amazing to see)
10. Lindbergh |

Jari Kurri - if only for a brief moment
Frank Bathe - better beard than Lieno
Mrs. John Druce - 'nuff said
Forbes Kennedy - wild man
Dave Snuggerud - really cool name
Glenn "Chico" Resch - really bad hat
Kevin Haller - Stéphane Yelle's cousin?
Rick Foley - literally ate himself out of the league
Miroslav Dvorak - "Cookie" - Brad Marsh's best buddy
Larry Zeidel - the rock. Underrated Flyers' color commentator

i became a fan in 1980, and was fortunate to see some of the bullies remnants like clarke and barber and i loved them early on, but everything changed for me with that 84-85 team, which is still my favorite individual team.
others like howe, mccrimmon, zezel, tocchet, desjardins, lindros, podein, otto, gagne, primeau, williams, forsberg, markov, kapanen, esche, niittymaki, jr, pronger are amongst my favorites. only have room for 10, gotta' draw the line. |

i wouldn't argue with that, and both were clearly superior players...for me those selections are emotional attachments formed as a teenager. nothing ever compares to your first love.... |

While he was great as a player and I loved to watch him play, he wasn't one of my all time personal favorites. I guess the whole superstar/drama/mama's boy thing just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. However would be neck and neck with Clarke on my list of best Flyers players of all time! - BiggE
I hear you. When there was no drama or injuries (which wasn't often) I marveled at how good Lindros was. He was destined to be an all time NHL great, it's unfortunate the injuries and baggage derailed it. |

Absolutely. Even tho I'm a Phillies fan, I was a George Brett fanatic. My all time favorite player in any sport. I would argue with every Phillies fan who though Schmidt was better. |
