.280 was considered a slugger.

there were a handful of .300 hitters like Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn, but it was far less than today. Power hitters hit for power and sacrificed their avg.

.267 is relatively low for a guy you'd consider one of the greatest of all time. His advanced stats are what really sticks out though. A WAR over 100 and a career OPS of .907. He may not have had a high average, but he walked a ton. His defense was outstanding as well.

13 seasons of at least 30 home runs too.

I don't think it's low. A top home run and RBI guy that bats .270. I'll take it.

I dunno if I've ever heard anybody say something bad about Rod Brind'Amour.

It's all about the guy's determination and work ethic.

He's one of those players that never was, nor never will never be booed in Philly.
He was even given applause when he came to play in a Carolina sweater. Nobody wanted to see Brindy leave.

His hockey Q rating might be close to flawless.

I'll take your word on that, for sure. I was pretty young at the time. Teenage years. I definitely wore orange glasses at that point of my adolescence, and Brindy was my favorite player during his stay.

I have told this Frank Bathe story before but it still makes me laugh.

I used to hang out with a couple of brothers, one of them was an assist equipt man in 1980 era. He didnt go on road trips. He was the guy who Hospodar took a swing at when he was a Ranger.

Frank Bathe had a Datsun 240Z and had a slow leak in a tire.

When he went on road trips he used to ask the guy who he left the car with to keep filling the air in it, he didnt get a new tire. I was in that car one or two times and it always blew my mind he couldn't make time or spend the cash for a new tire ?

Might need to do some research. Schmidt was a career 267 hitter. He hit .316 one season. Also had a number of seasons where he he hit in the .270- .280 range.

Schmidt was a GREAT hitter. His OB% was outstanding. He walked a ton, consistently hit for power and drove in runs by the bushel. Comparing him to Dave Kingman is so ridiculous that it really shouldn't merit a response.

baseball is a game for statisticians, but sometimes you just gotta watch the product.

I grew up in a house where the Phillies were on every day. I watched a lot of bad baseball, but I loved Schmidt. I know some people didn't, and he was god-awful with the press (and even fans at times). Most have come around at this point and welcome his presence with open arms.

Klingman made way less of an impact than Schmidt. Way less. When people bring up the best players in their position of all time, Schmidt gets mentioned in every argument. Klingman not so much.

Pelle Lindbergh, of course, was a big favorite. So were Hextall, Propp, Kerr, LeClair, Sinisalo, Barber, Jimmy Watson, Brad Marsh, Desjardins, Brind'Amour, Lindros, Recchi, Kevin Dineen, McCrimmon, Podein, Dailey, Craven, Eklund, Zezel, Bridgman, Tocchet, Dorny and quite a few others.

I use 1999-2000 as a cutoff year for "favorite players," because that was the year I first started getting NHL pressbox credentials and I started to view the game in a different way.

Gwynn could sometimes go a week of ABs at time without swinging and missing at a pitch, much less an actual swinging strikeout. Most of his rare Ks were on called third strikes.

I really liked the Sanheim pick in that spot. Like his upside a lot, and I think he was the second-best all-around draft-eligible D prospect (after Ekblad) by the end of last season.

I'd have been fine if the Flyers picked Kapanen, but I was not surprised that he fell as far in the first round as he did. Prior to the draft, I wrote a blog on why Kapanen might drop significantly.
