On the other hand, those same tools validate the value of guys like Couturier, Raffl, and Read. Not sure those guys would have the same standing w/ the general fan base without things like quality of competition and zone usage entering the popular consciousness. - Tomahawk
Oh, no doubt.
The tools work both ways. |

My hope for this season (besides no injuries) is for Vinny to have a strong first half so we can get a decent return for him at the trade deadline.
And I have to agree if G goes down with a long term injury we'll be in the basement. I think mason will stand on his head and our D will try their very best but eventually we'll just be running on fumes.
I am also curious to see who gets the A's this time around. I know who the fans want but I'm curious to see who the team thinks is ready for them. |

Flyers fans, for whatever reason, seem to always have that one dman they all don't like:
Tom Bladon
Rick Lapointe
Behn Wilson
Doug Crossman
Terry Carkner
Karl Dykhuis
Randy Jones
Matt Carle
Some were deservedly booed, some not so much. - BiggE
Bladon and Wilson in their prime would be better than anyone on their D right now |

Well, I've only seen him at the WJC, and yeah he looked GOOD.
But I mean, when I watch Crosby play, there's usually once a game where I have to throw up my hands and just wonder at how he does things and makes them look so effortless. He's just insanely good and his skills are amazing. That's what I see from McDavid.
Eichel just seems like more of a Toews style of game (not comparing the skill of the two players, just their games). He's good, but he's a very straightforward, no frills type of player. A very John LeClair type player with a smaller build.
I'm not saying Eichel won't be good, but I don't get all the super hype. - jmatchett383

Yeah, they're very different kinds of players.
Eichel has the size to not mess around... he rockets past the d and barrels straight to the net... the thing that separates him from similar players like Perry/Carter/Nash is that he's got the passing vision to get his teammates involved, too. |

Without Giroux, they'd be in the top 10 of the draft next year.
I wish the NHL had a similar lottery to the NBA where the top 3 picks are all lottery selected. As it stands now, Buffalo will get McDavid or Eichel as long as they finish last. - PhillySportsGuy

Just changing the odds though. I want them to give every team that misses the playoffs an opportunity to get a top 3 pick like the NBA does. Obviously, the odds will change depending on where the teams finish.
In the NBA, I think every team that misses the playoffs should have the same odds of getting a top 3 pick in the draft. In that league, a team that just misses the playoffs is just as far from a title as the team that finishes dead last. At times, they're even further. |

I think it was maybe Tomahawk who had the best idea.
Starting with the day that they are eliminated from the playoffs (a dynamic number for each team), the team that has accumulated the most points will get the first pick, and then follow in descending order.
So, a team that is eliminated with 18 games to go has a better chance of accumulating points than a team that gets eliminated in the last week. It would be a (small) mathematical nightmare for those keeping track, but it at least makes teams keep trying to win all season long. |

Out of this list, I can say, looking back, that Jones deserved it. - jmatchett383
Bladon: undeserved, was the most skilled dman on a team that won back to back cups, did fine work on the pp as well
Lapointe: deserved, never really did squat
Wilson: mixed; had some highlight reel moves and was one scary dude in a fight but he could never put it all together on a consistent basis and would make the same gaffes over and over
Crossman: mixed; played very well his first few years here, but wilted under Keenan's constant criticism. By the end, he just stopped trying and was awful
Carkner: undeserved; people wanted him to be more than he was. Guy gave his all, can't ask for more
Dykhuis: mixed; streaky player, frustrated fans by disappearing for long stretches. Scored some huge playoff goals though
Jones: deserved; generic journeyman, was kept around way too long
Carle: undeserved; moved the puck well and got it out consistently. Was never a physical player, live with it
AMac: TBD but for the most part, IMO, he's been fine |

love the last paragraph, so much for predicting future d men
Whether Jones was lucky last year, or if he is simply a contradiction skating, this year should be his last in a Flyers uniform. He is getting paid far too much for the type of player he is, and the team has far cheaper options in the minor leagues - Danny Syvret, Oskars Bartulis, and to a lesser extent Marc-Andre Bourdon and Michael Ratchuk - that should be ready to step up next year. With the team needing to resign Braydon Coburn and Ryan Parent after this year, Jones' $2.75 million will go a long way to off-setting that cost.
syvret, bartulis, ratchuk, ryan parent

Bladon put up a lot of points for a defenseman at the time and had a slaphot. He was prone to the bonehead play occasionally, i.e., unforced turnovers. But jeez, the guy was only human. He'd get booed occasionally but I thought it wasn't fair. On those teams there was not much to boo about. Some fans gotta have someone to boo and during that era he was the guy. |
