I don't know exactly what all of those voodoo numbers mean. That said, having actually watched him play live last preseason (assuming that competition is equal to/above QMJHL-level), he looked pretty damn good.

But, since he has some value on him, it means that he's absolutely terrible.

I don't remember anything specific, but he didn't look out of place and made some smart, efficient plays. Nothing that made my jaw drop, but nothing Randy Jones-esque.

If he's a -, that means the team is better with him off the ice than on.


As for the preseason, a few years ago I watched Chris DiDomenico completely embarrass Sidney Crosby... had Sid completely rattled.

He got -5 units of possession.

It just seems like an over-complicated way of quantifying (correctly or incorrectly) a player's perceived value to the team. Grossmann's rating signifies that he should be in the ECHL, at best. It's one small tool that you can use to evaluate people, and I really feel bad for the people who spend hours/days creating fancy pie charts and spreadsheets.
