Let's look deeper.
Age / Ppg giroux / Ppg Tavares
20 / NA/ .85
21 /.64 / .99
22 / .57 / .98
23 / .93 / 1.12
Yes giroux had had excellent seasons recently. But what is there to indicate Tavares would see any type of regression?
Tavares is primed for many more big years ahead - Just5

Could be a small factor. But the guy is younger and has a more even two way game IMO - Just5
Tavares is nothing special as a defensive forward. Neither is Giroux but he at least contributes on the PK.

I'd also factor in that Giroux instantly contributed to the Flyers. Giroux was the team leading point collector the first time he ever played in the playoffs his rookie season. Giroux was so good that the Flyers could afford to trade away Joffery Lupul to add to the defense. Giroux has been our lead scorer uncontested since 2010, even before moving on from Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Danny Briere. Giroux was most likely only getting average ice time among these players. Giroux has come up third in points in the league twice within the last three seasons.
Tarvares on the other hand has played behind no one on his team since entering the league.
Giroux deserves a lot of credit for his accomplishments. |

Well I'm not sure that you can hold a lack of supporting cast against Taveras. I think they're both great young players. But until Taveras matches what Giroux has done in big games, Giroux gets the edge.

Absolutely. At the same time, no disrespect to John Tavares or even Sidney Crosby but both the Islanders and Penguins were crystal clear of what they had when drafting each player first overall. Both were handed a top line spot and rightfully so due to their skill level and current state of their team at the time. Giroux wasn't handed anything. Giroux may have lost some point totals because he played behind certain and had to work his way up. The same way a guy like Scott Laughton may have to. |

Tavares could also have been hurt by not having any other top line talent around him, allowing opposing teams to focus on him more heavily.
That's not a knock on Giroux. The NHL's leading scorer over the past four years isn't Tavares or Crosby, it's Giroux. That speaks for itself. |

Each player has different incentives in their contract. For him to earn 2.85 he'd probably have to hit markers in several categories like games played, goals, points, average TOI per game, and so on. - mochoson
pretty sure you're supposed to be more condescending than that and not even attempt to actually answer the question.
EDIT: also, never let it die. |

I've heard the same thing and I agree. The real question of signing with Boston is having a guaranteed top 6 spot, both due to the amount of good players they have, and the cap situation to keep him on the roster. - MJL
So, since these contracts are capped and have max bonuses, really this kid just needs to get teams to go to the max and select the one that fits him best. I wouldn't want to go to a place that guarantees me a spot in the top six. And I would never want a player that asks for a guarantee like that. But, if he is really that good, we really need more at wing. Unfortunately we need an LW not RW. |

His contract should end up looking a lot like J Schultz's ELC:
http://www.capgeek.com/player/2305
~$900k in salary, ~$90k signing bonus, $850k on Schedule A (the stuff you listed above) bonuses, and up to $2M worth of Schedule B (league leaders/awards/honors) bonuses.
Schedule B's are pretty hard to get, so you're probably looking at an overall cap impact of less than $2M for him in total. Probably a fraction of that, judging by his talent level. |

His stupid freaking smile on his face on Ek's blog is enough for me to say pass. Seriously you ever meet a genuine person that smiles like that? |

That's a smirk, not a smile. Maybe he was unhappy to be drafted by the Hawks. |

Agreed. So any team willing to pay this lines up and he chooses. That simple. |

Putting him on the roster is kind of a prerequisite to getting him signed, so... - Tomahawk
Not sure how many will say sure you can have a top 6 spot........Even if they do he has not played more than 44 games in a season at BC......
No knock on college hockey but it's not to me at the level of competition that the 3 junior leagues offer on most years. Can he maintain it ? Is he even legit he didn't show many signs of life at BC until his senior year.
Plenty of questions. |

Yeah, not sure he's really worth the cap-overage risk for the Flyers. If he were a RH puck-moving dman, I'd might consider it.
Laughton's more talented than him anyway. |

I would say Laughton is at this moment & if they feel Laughton is best served right now in the AHL not sure how they could say Hayes deserves a spot let alone top 6 out of the gates. |

Maybe they don't think that if they are in on him like Ek says. Or maybe, they ask the question for themselves. "Does he really expect to be handed a top 6 spot?" |

Well they are there to speak with him so maybe they have serious interest but that's part of their fact finding in the meeting.
Who knows...... |

I have a hard time believing he is asking for top 6 .... although I would think he is looking for a roster spot on an NHL club. Jmo. |

I think the most they could expect is a guarantee that he would get at least a shot in camp to win a top-6 spot and PP-time. I don't think any sane GM/coach would hand the job over to a 22-yo kid sight unseen. |
