Except for the fact that Voracek is pretty good at the point and Vinny has a lethal shot on the PP. This set up has worked previously. - GOA88
They used Lecavalier on the top unit when it's 5 on 3, not 5 on 4. Voracek operates more from the half wall then the point, and isn't a true PP point man. |

Well first of all we don't even know that Akeson is going to make the team. And secondly, Couturier had two 96 point seasons in Juniors. I would say that Couturier is more offensively talented then Akeson is. - MJL
Jr stats don't mean mush in the NHL. I know that counters my Akeson point, but in all reality Akeson is more of a power play guy at this point then couturier. I think that couturier still has a lot of offensive talent at this level that he hasn't tapped into yet, but I think those skills will be more 5 on 5, with good cycle play.
And I think that Akeson makes this team because they will lose him if they don't. Sure he would be a great piece to stash in the AHL for injury call ups but that isn't possible now. I'd like to see him played with the third line and spot starts on the second line when we need scoring.
Schenn G Voracek

I would really like to see berube juggle lines depending on the outcome of the game. It seems that berube at times can be reactive instead of proactive and from what I've read about Hexy he is the total opposite. We may not have a perfect combo for a second line but we have enough piece to mix and match to make two shutdown lines or three offensive lines if needed.
As of now are roster made up of 4 true top 6 players: G, voracek, Simmonds, and schenn
2 players who have lots of offensive skill but need to be put in right position to succeed: Akeson, VL (if healthy is and with right line mates is top 6 talent).
We also have 4 shutdown defensively sound players: couts, read, umber, and raffl
We still don't know how the rest of lineup will plan out and what PEB will bring

That's bcuz G has a lot more room to move around and teams can't force him as well on 5 on 3's. I honestly expect to score every 5 on 3 with G out there bcuz of it....man I can't wait till start of the season |

Why exactly is Akeson more of a PP guy then Couturier is? Akeson is not a proven NHL player in any manner. |

All around he doesn't have great nhl skill but there is no doubting his offensive abilities. I've watch him in both the O and in the AhL and on the player power he is a very good side wall and goal line playmaker.
And I'm a huge couts fan but what has he proven to be considered a power play guy? Some times it seems like people expect a lot from couts on the offensive side. I know he hasn't been given great offensive chances yet but he isn't Jonathan towes. |

And to add to my point couts have NEVER scored a ppg in his nhl career including playoffs. I think he had like 3 points in reg season and that's it. |

They're scheduling an hour long TV special to announce his decision. |

Yes, but he keeps firing the puck over the net instead of keeping a low, deflectable shot. |

Couts played where Voracek plays on the half wall in junior, and the Flyers have given him scarce time on the second power play unit which was constantly changing personnel and had little to no consistency. Also, he quarterbacked the powerplay in juniors, but since we don't have a right shooting powerplay defenseman it is less effective to quarterback it from the right wall. All those contribute to why I think there is untapped powerplay potential from Couturier.
This is a quote from Hockey's Future about Couturier:
Perhaps his on-ice vision is his greatest asset, with a knack for finding an open teammate and threading a pass across the rink.
As for his offensive expectations most of that comes from his amazing junior numbers where he led the QMJHL in scoring the year before he was draft eligible and matched his production in less games and with mono the next year. Also, he showed he has a great shot and good puck protection ability in the NHL.

Most of his PP time comes as a result of being deployed at the end of the PP. Couts line was used after almost every failed PP the Flyers had last season.
That's why I think his PP minutes are a bit distorted. He may end up with 45 seconds, but it was probably the last 15 seconds of 3 PPs. |

Yeah, wouldn't be surprised given usage that his PP production would be low, but 0 PP goals over 200 games? Pretty crazy, you'd think he would have popped one in via blind luck by now.
Problem w/ him on the PP is redundancy on the right-boards and right-point. The only other place for him is net-front, and you can't afford to lose him to a flying puck. |

I think it's more about lack of opportunity. In my mind, I can't even remember him attempting a shot on the PP. |

Out of his 86 jr goals 19 were on pp. and I'm guessing he was on top unit with other gifted players against players who haven't learn pk sills yet. I'm not saying that he will never develop into a pp guy but he hasn't even scored more the 13goals yet or more then 30 assist. What makes couts so special is that he is a very well round 21 year old. I think handing him perimeter pp duties when we have other players that are more polished is crazy. And as someone said the 2nd unit won't get much ice time. I'd rather see couts and read be the first guy off the bench after a power play when guys like ov and maklin are 2minutes fresh.
