I'd rather see couts and read be the first guy off the bench after a power play when guys like ov and maklin are 2minutes fresh. - AGL_91
I'm guessing that's what we'll continue to see...
That leaves Akeson/Schenn or Vinny/Umberger on the 2nd-unit. |

Rank these 5 scenarios for the 2014-2015 NHL season from most likely to least likely.
1) The Flyers make a trade for an "elite" defenseman (Suter, Subban, Weber, Doughty type) prior to the TDL, with Wayne Simmonds and Braydon Coburn going the other way along with picks
2) The Jumbo tron falls on the ice during a game resulting in no less than 4 casualties, including at least one official.
3) Zac Rinaldo produces 25 points
4) Shayne Gostisbehere makes the team out of camp and becomes the first Flyer to ever win the Calder Trophy.
5) Anthony Stolarz becomes the Flyers' starting goaltender by March. - jmatchett383

Out of his 86 jr goals 19 were on pp. and I'm guessing he was on top unit with other gifted players against players who haven't learn pk sills yet. I'm not saying that he will never develop into a pp guy but he hasn't even scored more the 13goals yet or more then 30 assist. What makes couts so special is that he is a very well round 21 year old. I think handing him perimeter pp duties when we have other players that are more polished is crazy. And as someone said the 2nd unit won't get much ice time. I'd rather see couts and read be the first guy off the bench after a power play when guys like ov and maklin are 2minutes fresh. - AGL_91
Its completely reasonable to give him the time on the powerplay like the Flyers did (though more consistency on the second unit couldn't hurt), but its also reasonable to expect him to show more offensively if he got more powerplay time.
Being well-rounded is what got Couts on the team at 18, but his potential to score and be an elite two-way center in the league are what got him drafted in the top ten. |

Which should help the team seeing that they are a great shut down tandem. Add raffl to the wing after a power play and we shouldn't let the "momentum" swing into the other teams favour |

If we gave Rinaldo the first line left wing spot, there is no way he wouldn't get 30 points in a season. |

If Vinny is on the 2nd unit... Which is a bad idea IMO. Who plays the 1st unit? We need a forward to play point because we only have (2) offensive d-men and one (MacDonald) that can somewhat fill that role. Vinny needs to be a supplement to the 1st PP, not the key cog in the 2nd PP. Hopefully Ghost makes the team and makes the units more interesting. |

Honestly though, I would bet on both Pronger and Timonen making complete recoveries and being our top D pair before any of those 5.

I'm very happy that everyone agreed that it is more likely that the Jumbo Tron falls and kills a bunch of people than for the Flyers to acquire an elite defenseman. |

We'd move out of the umbrella for the second unit, so:
Umberger (net front presence), Vinny, and Read up front with MDZ(Right Point) and Amac (Left Point) on defense would be my guess. |

I like the hiring of Darryl Metcalf. I dislike the hiring of Cam Charron, who from my experiences is a weasel who can't be trusted. |

So how would u construct the 2nd unit?
VL is a lock IMO as trigger man
Umber will be I front of net guy
Amac and MDZ should run the point. I hate 1 forward in 2 unit to risky IMO esp at the end of the pp. I'd consider having Coburn with one of them if pp time running out.
That leaves the set up man between Akeson, read, and couts. |

Why not have Couturier as the front of net guy? He's very solid on his skates and is becoming harder and harder to outmuscle (insert him knocking Toews on his ass .gif here). Also, he deserves PP time and could pull the Hartnell drift back to the open spot for the one-timer. |

Schenn. He has a great shot and seems to have a noise for goal line pucks. I thought last year they should of used him instead of hartnell at times |

I'll take Vinnys one-timer any day over Schenn.
Still not a fan of Schenn when relying on him to produce offense in key situations. |

I don't have him on it this year with our current personnel. Above I put what I think it will be. I just think that if we get a right handed puck moving defenseman that we could let Couts quarterback the second unit and it/he would be more effective. For this year I'd do:
EDIT: (It killed my formatting)
1st Unit:
Simmer
Giroux-Schenn-Voracek
Streit
2nd Unit:
Umberger
Read-Vinny-Couts
MDZ
I'd prefer the guy in Umberger's spot to be right handed if Read quarterbacks it and the guy in MDZ's spot and Vinny's spot to be right handed if Couts quarterbacks it. |
