Todd Cordell: New Jersey Devils 5 vs 5 Goals Data: Defense - Todd.Cordell
To be honest, your logic with Greene and Fayne appears to be very circular.
The Devils play a low-scoring style of hockey on each end of the ice. I've heard you use that as an explanation for lack of offensive production, and that's fine.
But, it can't go both ways.
If the system itself is an explanation for lack of offensive production then how can it also be an explanation for lack of defensive stability?
I don't mean to be adversarial at all, but when fans of other teams make comments about a perceived statistical favoritism in the blogs, I think this is where they are coming from.
Please understand that I mean to point this out in the most positive way possible. I hope it helps you become better at the things you're working towards. |

No surprise...Volchenkov sucked. Nice when stats support what the naked eye sees. - jersey1414
Am I totally misinterpretting this chart or does Volchenkov actually have the best differential at +3? |

That's how I read it too, but I have no idea what's going on in general. |

Yeah from what the chart reads Volchy was our best D based on these numbers
However, he was injured for a good portion of last year so the sample size was less probably got a lot of offensive zone starts and faced weaker competition.
So to respond to the first comment, no the numbers are liars on this one. |

Todd, please know that we are dummies so the red and green numbers to help us delineate good and bad are a great help! |

Volchenkov wasn't that bad i certainly would take him over Bryce and Harold...He was just way overpaid. |

Absolutely, I would take Volchenkov over Salvador or Pete Jr any day. This is a great example of how some data can be misleading, as it doesn't take into account certain variables as Todd pointed out, time on ice & quality of opponent particularly. According to the numbers on this chart Volchenkov put up the 'highest ranking' numbers and Greene was second to last, but we all know that is not qualitatively correct. |

He's not saying the system is the reason, he's saying that we don't score and Greene/Fayne played against the best players in the league on a nightly basis. For a team with a negative goal differential its no surprise that the Dmen that play the most were on the ice for a bunch of goals |

I've heard- Past Tense
I hear- Present Tense
I will hear- Future Tense
I said that he has used the system as "the reason" (to use your words) in other blogs when it was more suited to the point he was trying to make.
Do you just try to twist around what I'm saying because you feel like arguing with me? Honestly, I feel like you're messing with me...

What concerns me the most is not just these shabby numbers, but the reality that we'll be throwing at least 2 or 3 rookies on the back end. Having those green kids learn from these sorts of players doesn't inspire much confidence. |
