MEC tents are well-made. We have used an MEC Tarn 3 for years on backcountry hiking and canoe trips through some wicked thunderstorms and such. The beauty of the Tarn 3 is that if you are car camping you can also fit a double air matress in it.
The Tarn 2 (a little smaller than the 3) is $225. No leaks. If that is still too expensive, you might find something midrange $ at Sail.
