Yeah, lot of people cite improved health as a possible linchpin, but it's curious that neither Hexy nor Chief (to my knowledge) have cited Vinny's back as the main reason for his struggles -- most of the talk has been centered on his level of preparation and unwillingness to adapt his game to help facilitate a fit.
BTW, Part 2 of BSH's interview w/ Hexy is up:

Berube has absolutely mentioned and talked about Lecavalier being injured in previous interviews. And given it as part of the reason for his struggles last season. |

Don't you think being fully healthy will enable him to try and "adapt his game to help facilitate a fit" better? Especially when one of the issues is increased skating?
I don't think injuries that are played through are often used as explanations for poor play, because they come off as excuses, especially guys with big contracts. |

Rinaldo blows. He cant play special teams. He is a horrible defender. Akeson at least has an offensive element and can play on the PP2 unit. I'm confident that Akeson is better in his own end right now than Rinaldo. Akeson needs a longer look on the roster, and nothing in preseason will tell me that he shouldn't at least be on the roster. Unless the ghost of Jody Shelley enters his body - Just5
Well if he indeed does blow, then he'll be traded, or demoted, and won't make the team. So what are you worried about?
You've been confident in a lot of things in the past, such as Lauridsen is absolutely capable of playing as well defensively as Grossmann. That the team doesn't need Coburn and should trade him. There have been lots of statements made with confidence that have turned out to be completely false. |

I don't think you know what the word completely means. Akeson has played nine NHL games, seven of them were playoff games, and he performed quite well aside from from one dumb/unfortunate penalty.
I want him and Vinny to play together on the 3rd line (in terms of ES ice time). A good passer with a great shooter. |

The last 8 NHL-games suggest so. - Tomahawk
If your foolish enough to think that small of a sample gives a true representaiton of the situation, maybe it might. Alos ignores a lot of factors. Let's see if Lecavalier can come to camp healthy and strong, and ready to play. And let's also see if Akeson can make the team and stay there.
But again, you state that the past with Lecavalier doesn't matter, whether it's reputaiton or standing, or whatever. But the past 8 games of Akeson does matter. |

I am hoping Schenn works well on the top line which I think he can. Also I hope Vinny flourishes playing center with maybe Simmonds and whoever is on the other wing. If a team loses a center early then hopefully some market for Vinny can be made and we can deal him then.
- J35Bacher
I have not seen that much chatter about Simmonds on line one. Is it because both Simmonds and Voracek are RW'ers? I would assume it would be easier to switch from RW to LW, than C to LW (Schenn). And I'd assume that one of Simmonds or Voracek are skilled enough to swap sides.
My thoughts are Simmonds plays well with Giroux on the PP. Simmonds is a better replacement to Hartnell, than Schenn - being that Simmonds and Hartnell have a similar style of play. And, that style worked well with Giroux and Voracek.
This leaves B.Schenn to be a C or W'er for VL or Coots. |

I think I do know what it means. NHL history is full of players who played well in a small sample of games, even in a playoff situation, only to falter in future seasons. Remember Todd Bergen? He had 13 points in 17 playoff games for the Flyers in 84-85. Never played for the Flyers again.
Akeson is completely unproven as an NHL player. 9 games does not prove a player is a full time NHL player. He's earned a chance, and deserves a good look. Nothing more.

It guess it depends on whether or not you believe his struggles only started this year w/ those injuries, or not.
Watching him over the past several seasons, I personally feel like his days of being able to beat guys like Marc Staal and Seidenberg consistently H2H are long over. Forget the likes of McDonagh and Chara. |

Bergen was a special case, though. He wanted to pursue a professional golfing career, despised playing for Keenan and forced a trade. Then he had an abdominal tear when he was finally traded and retired.

We have seen glimpses of what the kid can do.... I think we should let training camp play out, let the preseason play out, and then decide. If Vinny still struggles, the 4th line C spot and top unit PP time might be the best scenario. If he is healthy and plays like he did over the first 12 games of the year.. then we go by that..
However, to say that Akeson is completely unproven at the NHL level miggghtt be inaccurate. He has played in 9 NHL games and has not looked at of place a bit. 5 points in 9 NHL games isnt shabby. I think he deserves a shot. |

No, Shayne Gostisbehere is completely unproven as an NHL player because he has never played in an NHL game in the preseason, the regular season or the playoffs.

I stand by all those statements. Where's the video evidence of Lauridsen not being able to fill Grossman's role. Any advanced stats of a Flyers defense minus Coburn? |

At least with TV you just hit the " mute" button and still watch, but radio is a different ball game. |
