Very possible, although the Flyers have signed guys prior to the July 1st opening of free agency, like Roenick.

I'm just not a fan of trading assets for a pending free agent.

- Jsaquella

Washington was not pleased about us talking to Roenick.

Yeah Malakhov was beastly during that playoff run.

Actually he probably won't be. Hes likely to stick to the end of camp/preseason and could get a lot just by being with the big club for some of the first 9 games. I think he'll miss some Rimouski games early.

I don't see that working under the cap.

But honestly, if he's given the right opportunities, he could get close.

I feel cautiously optimistic about Vinny this season

- JAKEw1234

I completely understand why people including Jsaq and the organization would be down on Vinny and I also understand goals is a small portion of what to expect from a center or a possible hall of famer who can only do one thing but from a player who missed as much time as he did, saw only second unit PP time for the most part and isn't expectly a speedster, I can't help but be a little impressed that he was able to hit the 20 goal mark. Jagr for example was unable to hit 20, also slower, can only play one position and his injuries I'm sure were less serious. Heck, many wish Jagr was still here. Right now I think it's best to really hope for the best.

Those teams have recent cups to use to put out the fire though.

and those examples of warts are very few and far in between for these franchises.

I'm a lot more worried about Vinny's ability to fit in the system and play effective all around hockey than his likelihood of scoring twenty or more goals.

Goals are wonderful. Goals are needed. So is preventing them. Vinny's not so strong at that part of it.

The WHL & OHL start Sept 24
- ob18

Still would be smarter to start when the NHL does, since the junior leagues work with them so much. Maybe it has something to do with school, I don't know.

Those leagues play the majority of their games on weekends when most fans will go to games (some games are during the week).

It likely does have to do with school as well.

It's a lot easier to be OK with that one than say Hamhuis. Still, don't like it.
- Jsaquella

To be fair, Holmgren did upgrade the draft pick when he traded Hambuis's rights to Pitt. That being said, I really hate the practice too.

He's a very smart, big, and toughish player with a ton of experience and great stick handling skills. It seems like he's open to changing his game in order to fit into the system. I don't have any doubt that he'll be able to play a defensively sound game this season if he chooses to. I don't mean to make it sound like playing a good defensive game is easy, but I think at it's core, all it takes is the hockey smarts and awareness (both of which Vinny has) to play positionally sound and with some anticipation, and an active stick (which Vinny seems to be able to use).

Plus, it seems to me that Lecavalier doesn't rely on his rush game to support his goal totals (even though I think he's a strong set up man on the rush, especially with that quick wraparound-pass move that he does a good amount), so I don't really see a defensively responsible game hindering his offensive production, based on his skill set. His speed will probably be a problem for the remainder of his Flyers tenure, but I don't think his defensive game will be,

Even if Jags wasn't the greatest defensive player or swiftest skater, he was an immediate and effective roster fit, and thus was in a position to make everybody around him better.

Unless Umberger's going to be the key to unlocking Vinny's potential here ( since he's likely the only change they've made up front), the burden is going to rest squarely on Vinny's shoulders to either get better, or as Chief suggested, change his game to find a niche.

He didn't seem able to change last season. That's the issue, he wasn't really positionally responsible. When he was on the ice, far too often the other team was controlling play.

I hope that, since it's all but certain he will be here, that he can adapt. The reports are that he's busting his ass to be ready for camp. And while I have concerns about his ability to adjust, I'm going to root for him to do well, because his success will enhance the Flyers chances for success.

My criticism isn't a hope that he will fail. Same goes for being critical of MacDonald or Grossmann. I want them to have success, as long as they wear a Flyers jersey.

I think there's ways they can make it work. I'm not sold Berube is the guy that can find a way to make it work. I'd even be open to using Vinny as the RW with Giroux. Less of a defensive burden, and Vinny can still shoot.

Definitely not, although right now, Ryan is probably the better player. In a year or two, Simmonds could easily surpass him and will still be cheaper...and younger

I think it's already been proven around the league that everyone wants Wayne Simmonds. I think it has been proven the reception he got when he first came to Philly, Florida wanting him early this offseason. He has to be even more wanted around the league now from the dollars he's signed to, the point production he provides, physical presence and hard work.

Give him an "A" right now!

You guys are gonna think I'm crazy but I wish we never fired Laviolette the way that we did and I'm wishing now that maybe we had a Coach we a longer track record. Heck, I'm interested in what John Tortorella could do here and what he did with Lecavalier in Tampa to make him such a special player that saw him win a Cup.
