Emery was bad in two of the three playoff games he played in and the Rangers took full advantage of his lack of mobility. That's why his SV% was .888, compared to .939 for Mason.

I don't think he was bad in any of the games he played in. He played admirably if every game he played in, he battled, and gave the Flyers a chance to win. All you can ask for from a backup. Every goalie has weaknesses, even more so for backups. |

If they had the cap space (of if Mase was out the year), there would definitely be ready replacements out there -- there are more starting-caliber guys than there are jobs. For example, Cam Ward could probably be had for a song.
But yeah... all things considered, losing Mason for a large chunk of the season would likely be devastating under present constraints. - Tomahawk
I'd chck on Broduer if he was unsgned if Masn wnt dwn for the year |

I love Emery and he certainly battled like the warrior that he is. But lets face it, he does have mobility issues and I question his ability to fill in as the #1 goalie for any significant length of time.

Sounds like a lot of people here really undervalue what Mason did for this team last season. Without Mason this team is by no means a playoff team. With relatively the same sup par defense we have had over the last few seaons.... Look at the numbers other goalies have put up and look at Mason's. That guy is relied upon to make 10 bell saves on a regular basis and has consistantly bailed his defense out. He doesnt have a defense like LA, NYR or BOS to hide behind and still puts up comparable numbers to Quick, Lundqvist and Rask. No Mason=No playoffs. Hopefully we dont have to find out in order to validate my words. I also feel comfortable saying BOB would not have the same success in Philly as he does in CBJ. He had his chance and blew it. I dont miss him. |

No doubt that Giroux is the most important player on the club, however replacing a quality starting goalie is not as easy as it sounds, especially when other teams know you are desperate to do so. - BiggE
Mason probably wasn't a equality starter when we got him. The organization helped make him this way. |

Cap space could be a big issue in adding another goalie. Guys like Ward would require Mason to be on LTIR & they'd probably have to move Timonen there as well. The Flyers also lack a second round pick in the 2015 draft, which also could be an issue. If a team is dealing an "extra" goalie they generally will want a pick or prospect.

Sure he does have weaknesses to his game. But how many backups don't? Emery is a good goalie, that can come in and play well for a team. He's shown that both here, and in Chcago as a backup. The Flyers would likely have to acquire a veteran backup so they don't overplay Emery if Mason would go down. I have confidence in Emery as a backup filling in for an injured starter. And wouldn't be looking at him as a #1 goalie, but as a backup doing just that, filling in. |

Michael Leighton still has his Flyers mask and orange pads around somewhere.

Mason was/is a pretty talented goaltender who, it seems, required a change of scenery. It happens. |

Exactly. At this point I would still take Mason over BOB. BOB cant perform in pressure situations. Being a Flyers goalie is a pressure situation. Everybody just waiting for you to fail..... |

Safe and sound in the 'Hawks' back pocket. They're going to trade him to whichever team Ms Cleo says they're going to meet in the Finals... so Patrick Kane can do his thing again. |

Bob is a pretty good goaltender, too. I don't think Bob's story is fully written. He's a key piece on a team that is starting to emerge out of the Metro. |

He's the NHL equivalent of a sleeper cell. 'Hawks drafted and groomed him for that very moment. |
