Totally agree. People forget the work he turned in during the regular season when they brought him in. - johndewar
He did well prior to the Final, too. I wonder if he would have shut out Pittsburgh or Washington 3 times like he did to Montreal, but he did well vs the Bruins and Habs |

He's actually a pretty good goalie... its just too bad he'll never be able to outlive that Scott Norwood moment. |

Norwood and Jeff Carter are probably somehow related. |

Well, Carter eventually won...Norwood never kicked again.
Well he might have. I had the Giants and 4 points so I didn't care if he made it or missed it |

Are there any advanced stats on how a "good puck handling goalie" can effect a team's possession numbers? If the trapezoid opened up, you'd think these goalies would start having a more positive effect on these things. |

Hi Bill
How about a recap on the first Czech player to actually come over and play in the Flyers organization, the unremarkable Rudy Tacjnar?
He may have been the first eastern block player ever that came over and played? |

Five players, IMO, that must stay healthy for the Flyers to succeed:
Claude Giroux
Obvious, no explanation necessary.
Steve Mason
I have confidence that Emery can fill in for the short term, but if Mason is lost for any length of time, they are in serious trouble
Braydon Coburn
The big guy is their #1 shutdown dman and will be expected to play major mns on the pk. There is no one on the roster that can do what Coburn does.
Sean Couturier
The Pk would greatly suffer without Coots and no other Flyers center can fill his shutdown role
Wayne Simmonds
Simmer is crucial to the success of the pp and he brings a physical element that no one else in the top 9 can replace - BiggE
Simmonds can easily be replaced. He's just a younger version of Hartnell, so I'm sure Hartnell could pick up the slack if needed. |

Plus Hartnell has better chemistry with Richards. |

You can try looking at the team's shot metrics with and without the puck handling goalie... control for competition and roster changes, and you might glean some info from that.
Numbers aside, I think it's pretty safe to assume that a guy like Mason who can completely diffuse a forecheck w/ a single pass probably has a positive marginal effect. I'm glad we finally have one of those again, versus seeing our attack constantly stymied by Fatso. |

Absolutely. Plus, his line with Leino and Briere has had great chemistry in the past. |

Yea, the numbers from the Devils pre-trapezoid would be interesting to see if they exist. For whatever reason my work blocks behindthenet as a "gambling" site :/ |
