I am frightened by the words "expanded role". People like Antoine Roussell spent time in the minors and perhaps that helped mold them. Even Jody Shelley and Paul Holmgren were in the minors and love him as a GM or not, Paul Holmgren was THE power forward along with Clark Gillies in the late 70's early 80's.

As long as his contract comes under the limit and he can be waived/sent down and not be counting against the cap. Also a waste of a contract slot. Arrgghhh

Seems odd, but he is really the last guy in the "Bully mold". Feisty, scrappy agitator with a mean streak who isn't afraid to drop the gloves. Unfortunately, he is too small for an enforcer role. Perhaps those dinosaurs are past their time, but it's hard to see the Flyers without one (Shelley being the last). I just hate to think that this is the leverage to keep opposing teams from targeting our stars. I know Bill didn't talk about this, but it seems like the elephant in the room.

Seems like a real head scratcher of a signing both in terms of a modest raise and timing. If you want to sign when his stock is low then sign him for the same or less salary, not more. Sure if he becomes a regular third liner next season (I don't see it after last years regression) then this is a good contract. Seems like the gamble does not outweight the reward. Of course, this isn't going to have crippling effects on next year or even three years down the road as he can be waived for no hit against the cap. So while I think it is a poor move on Hexys part, the AMAC contract (negotiated by Homer), numerous depth signings, Hartnell trade and DLZ signing will all have bigger impacts on the club and will define this offseason and not this poor resigning, IMHO.

As for a current enforcer, isn't that Rosehills role?

I find the timing odd more than anything else. The Flyers obviously like Rinaldo, whatever his pros and cons are. But why sign him now, when he has a season left on his contract & coming off a season where he regressed as a player?

The Flyers obviously like Rinaldo, and want to see him develop as a player. So why put a young player under the pressure of having to play for a contract? Let him be comfortable, but still letting him know what is expected of him going forward, and show some confidence in the player. I would have preferred a one year deal, but really with the cap cost, it's not a big deal.

Its not a big deal at all. He's our energy guy, our coach likes him, he can fight, check and skate and he's cheap! If he plays bad.... scratch him or trade him for a late round pick.

Nobody is saying it's a big deal, just an oddly timed one. Because of the lack of other news, & Rinaldo being a divisive player, this will get heavily discussed. Just the nature of the beast

As for the timing, I can only surmise that Hexy decided to forestall the inevitable crush of suitors who would be clamoring to massively overpay Rinaldo at free agency.

Only thing I can agree on is the timing of the signing. It didnt make sense. Almost like Hexy got bored and needed something to do.

Maybe Hexy has the uncanny ability of foresight?! He knew Rinaldo was going to transform into the ultimate penalty killing machine so he grabbed him up before his value sky rocketed.

He provides literally nothing besides playing with (too much of) an edge. No scoring, no defense, can't imagine him having good leadership in the lockerroom. All he does is bring down your clubs reputation.

kind of like a Carcillo minus the ability to score the occasional goal.


I want to like the guy, I want him to have a long and profitable career, because he does exhibit a certain exuberance that is frequently and sadly lacking in so many modern athletes. Zac obviously loves what he does. I just wish that the things he did were more conducive to winning hockey.

The four-game suspension Rinaldo drew late in the season for a needless high hit that concussed Buffalo Sabres defenseman Chad Ruhwedel was a setback in the player's efforts to erase an image of being a player who could not be trusted on the ice.

The other two incidents from last season that stood out to me were:

1) Rinaldo taking a completely unnecessary high sticking penalty at the end of the 2nd period against Phoenix in October. The Coyotes scored the game winning goal 13 seconds later.

2) Rinaldo being goaded by Roussel into giving up a seven minute powerplay not even two minutes into the game against Dallas in December. The Flyers killed it off, but were out of energy in the second and third periods and got blown out. How short must Rinaldo's fuse be if he can totally lose his poop that early in a game against a Western team?

Actually Carcillo is a markedly better player than Rinaldo. He's had two double digit goal season in the NHL.

The only level Rinaldo scored more than 9 goals at was junior, when he had 10
