Unless hes going to be expansion bait ( or as I said in another post) the reason Vinny LeCavalier gives up playing here on the 4th line and willing accepts a trade to somewhere else or retires rather than have Zach on his line
Imagine being a 4th line guy struggling for ice time trying to move up in the organization and Rinaldo either gets a penalty early in your shift or keeps coughing the puck up or having passes deflect off his stick or he passes into a parallel dimension/alternate reality when its an easy pass to you. His linemates would kill him for destroying their shifts and their chances - Steelmanpa
Leaving Vinny unprotected in an expansion draft would probably get us out from under his contract. That might be wishful thinking, since Bettman is apparently shooting down the notion of expanding (per TSN).

I find the greed of expansion fees and the notion of continuing to pour money into failing franchises to be exactly Bettmans MO. its his plan for greatness for the NHL along with twenty outdoor games a year starting at Thankgiving and ending in a Valentines Day bash in Edmonton

According to Bill, it's likely Nicholas Aube-Kubel will open the season with his junior team on Sept 10 then make his way here for rookie camp. |

Makes sense, I doubt he stays in Flyers camp too long, and he's primed for a big year in the Q |

Agreed, Expansion will slam a ton of cash into the wallets of NHL owners, Bettman's being coy to drive the market. As soon as they came up with unbalanced divisions, the die was cast for expansion. |

Goals scored and conceded is a statistic. Goals decide the outcome of the game.
His teammates outside of Hall all did a better job at scoring and preventing goals than Rinaldo did. - Feanor
did you not realize it's a misuse of stats to disagree with mjl's opinion? |

I never really got the dislike for Rinaldo. Sure he doesn't contribute much offensively and is prone to a bad penalty, but he is one of the few players who can pump up a team without having to rely on something as flaky as scoring. You can see through his effort and attitude that he wants to help the team however he can, and I will never mind having a player like that on our team for two more years. |

I think its a mistake to pin greed on Bettman. Remember, he serves at the pleasure of the owners. On the other hand, I think it is absolutely fair to pin greed on the owners in the NHL. |

It's possible, but any smart expansion team should go after youth way before they go for Vinny. I know it was just hockey fans on reddit, but the mock expansion draft they did last year left names like Smith, Armia, McNabb, Nyquist, Teravainen, Klefbom, de Haan, Stalock, Ristolainen, Gudas, and a bunch of other good young names exposed. The good youth selection probably wouldn't be so deep in a real expansion draft, but a lot of teams in the mock draft were trapped because they were forced to protect their NTC players. |

The last time they expanded, anyone with under two years pro experience was not eligible to be drafted, and teams could protect a good number of players besides.
I could see an expansion team taking Vinny for two reasons:
1. Name to sell to fans
2. Cap hit will help them reach the floor for a year or two |

This will be a very different expansion draft if there is a wealth of young talent available. In the past, it has been career minor leaguers and veterans past their prime who have been exposed.

Not sure about that, I think a lot of teams may well decide to protect younger, cheaper guys and expose still solid vets on longer term deals for big cash and try to create some cap room in losing players for nothing. |

and that is precisely what I was thinking. Plus, you get a talented player who will put points on the board and keep things interesting while you build a fanbase and a roster.

Sure with a later round pick I could see him getting picked in that case. But to pick him over a good prospect in earlier rounds would be unwise of either team. |

Oh, sure, if a team leaves a young guy out there, he'll get grabbed, but look at the Flyers and eliminate all the guys who have less than two pro seasons, then eliminate 7 forwards, 5 defensemen & 1 goalie.
There's not much there. Guys like Akeson and Rinaldo, vets like Vinny, Schultz and Grossmann.
Guys like Raffl, Laughton, Bellemare and Cousins would be exempt, as would Morin, Sanheim, Ghost and Alt. |

Does pro hockey in Europe count? We left Raffl exposed in the mock draft last year. |

Yes, goals decide the outcome of a game, not statistics. You made this statement earlier. "In the end every hockey game does come down to stats - goals scored and goals conceded.
No hockey game has ever been decided by statistics. Ever! End of story. Goals are not statistics, they are events that happen in a game and decide the game. The statistic is just how they are kept track of, and counted. Seems to be some confusion there on your part.
Most of Rinaldo's teammates are better hockey players, and also play with better hockey players. I would expect them to be better at scoring and preventing goals. |

Yes there's probably some difference in stats that way, but I don't think it will alter enough over that large of a sample size to change the idea, so I still think the point stands. His penalties and penalties drawn make an insignificant difference over the year. - JAKEw1234
I think it could potentially alter it greatly in either direction, or it could not. The bottom line is that I don't think you can use a statistic such as the Flyers overall PP% and apply it to one player, and state how many goals he has been the cause of indirectly. It's far too vague. And it's the same problem as other stats, in that they try to apply a team number, to an individual. Simply can't be done. Hockey is too much of a team game. With far too many variables.
But one thing I do agree with and stated earlier, if drawing or taking penalties is the focus of a player, well then I would say that player needs to find more to bring to the table. And in the case of Rinaldo, I want him to be a hockey player first, and concentrate or more important areas of the game, and an agitator second.
I don't disagree with the point, just how you got there. |
