Well I didn't paint all fans with that same brush...

Really though, follow the Flyers on Facebook or attend some games in the 200 level. I went to 12 last year and had to listen to four guys every game saying Mason was the problem and that we need to trade Couturier for Ryan Miller. A large portion of this fanbase is pretty close to clueless imo.

Facebook commenters on most media and sports entities are pretty terrible, on the whole.

Which is remarkable, considering these people are saying stupid things without the cloak of anonymity.

the worst part of the stanley cup being hoisted is that I have a fraction of the interest I once had in baseball and football and that makes for a long slog towards october.

Good point.

Hey, if anyone in the Philly area is looking for something to do this Saturday night, my duo, Fake ID, is playing the brand new Malelani Cafe, 6734 Germantown Ave in Mt. Airy from 7-10pm

BTW, it's a byob with great food!

He provides literally nothing besides playing with (too much of) an edge. No scoring, no defense, can't imagine him having good leadership in the lockerroom. All he does is bring down your clubs reputation.

Nobody is saying it's a big deal, just an oddly timed one. Because of the lack of other news, & Rinaldo being a divisive player, this will get heavily discussed. Just the nature of the beast

Never understood why people don't get that.

- Jsaquella

Rinaldo as a player, should be widely discussed, because one, it's the topic of the blog, and two, as Bill alluded to, he is a polarizing player, for obvious reasons. But really the timing of it was made into a big deal, when really it's a minor one. If a team likes a player, and beleives in the player, then they make an investment in that player. Which is what the team did. Right or wrong, they obviously see more in the player then some fans do. No sure why people don't get that. Also not sure why such hyperbole is posted about the player, such as he has zero skill, and that signing him to this deal is going to affect the team's ability to re-sign players such as Voracek, Schenn, or Couturier in the future. That's just cap panic.

3 pages on old Zac already. Outside of NHL refs, no one has given him this much attention since the day he was born.

I'm not thrilled with the Rinaldo re-sign. But it's low enough they can bury him in the AHL if they need to. I'm really hoping they have made it clear he has to win a spot in the NHL line-up though. I just feel he hasn't figured out how to ride that line between agitator and idiot. I felt like he was flat during the play-offs and looked lost probably because he was told to not generate any penalties on the threat of his life.
Timing does seem a bit bizarre for the signing...

I'm a Rinaldo fan as well. High energy, borderline assault and general scumbaggery are all things that I value quite highly when assessing hockey players and humans.

Wow. That line would be super tough to play against!
- acd513

Actually I think it would be. They are all very responsible defensively and have some offense and speed in their game.

I think your a little misguided. Just cause one fan has an opinion doesn't mean all Flyers fans see Rinaldo as Mike Peca. I actually think Flyers fansre prett smart and we know a he can and cannot do. Most of us on here have stated he needs another element to his ame to big more value
- J35Bacher

Exactly, there is a middle ground. Players that suck don't get re-signed to two year contracts. He certainly has some areas of his game that he needs to improve on. And he certainly has his faults. But any objective analysis also includes the physical skills and what he brings to the ice as a positive at times.

Just to sum it up it one easy sentence, I feel that Rinaldo has to figure out how to be a hockey player first, and agitator second. Not the other way around.

I find the timing odd more than anything else. The Flyers obviously like Rinaldo, whatever his pros and cons are. But why sign him now, when he has a season left on his contract & coming off a season where he regressed as a player?

Start the season, and if he's playing well, then re-sign him. There was really no reason to rush here. Not likely that he makes a lot more than the $850K he got & even more unlikely that there's a bidding war for him as a RFA

- Jsaquella

If Hartnell's propensity for taking penalties every bothered you, keep this in mind. He took 33 minors in 1,316:43 of ice time last season, or a minor every 39:54 minutes.

Rinaldo took 29 minors in 515:44 of ice time, or a minor every 17:47 minutes. So Rinaldo took minor penalties at more than double the rate Hartnell did.

in 67 regular season games this season, Rinaldo ranked 14th in the NHL with 31 credited hits.

Anyway, I'm hoping him being signed for three years makes him easier to trade.

Rinaldo, outside if hitting, brings nothing either. He's bad defensively, doesn't produce offense, takes penalties & lacks hockey sense. Even if he is eager to learn, it's either no sinking in or he's not able to put what he learned into practice.

He's 24, shown little improvement in terms of anything besides one half season where he was effective at drawing penalties and is a liability more than an asset.

- Jsaquella

all of which i agree with, which leads me to ask: how does a player of his ability, or lack thereof, not only earn an nhl roster spot, but also a 2 year extension before the final year of his contract has expired?
