it's very normal

it would be my go to if bulleit were not just about the same in quality and so much less in price

i haven't bought bourbon in months, since i got that eagle rare. might be time to get another bottle of something different. maybe a 10 year bulleit

- Shutdown

i recently got a bottle of bulleit 10. if you like bulleit, you'll like it, but I was kinda expecting something a bit bolder for a 10 year old.

tonight is the four roses small batch. i haven't opened it in a while and i forgot how spicy it is. it adds a little tingle that makes it seem like more than 90 proof. not really a heat but a tingle.

they're good people over there at four roses. they don't know me but i consider them close friends. almost family.

now the 1792 (rip, barrels)

i went to this bottle because i thought the tingle of the last one reminded me of this one. but now that i'm drinking it this is the burn, not the tingle. but this one is over 90 proof so i guess that's to be expected. i let a few cubes sit in it and it all works out.

and now just a splash of the buffalo trace. literally like one finger. one cube.

it's just so smooth. i can't think of an easier-drinking (to steal a beer phrase, i guess) bourbon. drink it in the winter, drink it in the summer, drink it by itself, mix it, whatever. and it's easily accessible - it's not some w.l. weller poop that you read about but have never seen a bottle of in your god damned mother (frank)ing life. god dammit.

if i could just get the special reserve or the 12 year old in my area. either one.

i'm not even interested in the old yeller antique 107 proof bullpoop. they can keep that.

i already know either one of them would be my favorite bourbon ever. a wheat bourbon with all this hype? like, come on. that's gonna be for me.

and now circling back to the woodford reserve.

people take this one for granted. it's like candy. it's also the first bourbon i ever bought. i was unhappy with scotch but knew there was something i liked about whiskey. i was in philly with kickbro in one of their weird state run liquor stores picking up booze for a get together at his place that night and decided to pick myself up a bottle of this on sale for $26 bucks and the rest is history.

wow. what a great cool story, bro.

it really is history.

so i convinced myself to grab a new bottle of bourbon when i was on the way to the liquor store for beer. this "convincing" process basically consisted of me excitedly saying "i'm gonna get a bottle of bourbon too" out loud. and that was that.

i chose larceny because i'd been doing a lot of talking about "wheaters".

i went through the usual process that leads to me not picking it up every other time i see it: i see it, say to myself "hey isn't that one of the wheated bourbons you're always reading about?", then convince myself that it isn't because it doesn't specifically say anything about wheat on the bottle.

then i go home, read on the internet that it is indeed a wheated bourbon, curse at myself, and forget all of this by the time i go back to the store.

only this time i just bought it anyway just in case.

anyway, makers mark is technically a wheated bourbon and i like it just fine but i don't think it's the best example of it because it tastes pretty much like a standard bourbon. bernheim was good but i don't see it anywhere anymore. and (frank) washington wheat. it tasted terrible and was obviously some anomaly.

so i went into this hopeful but knowing i could be in for a disappointment.

turns out this one's a beaut. there's no edges to it. it's, like, perfectly round. it's just soft and easy and light and smooth. it's exactly how i picture wheated whiskey in my mind. is there a burn? yeah, of course there is, it's still bourbon. but it's at the end and if this burn is too much for you just give up on whiskey.

toffee, vanilla, caramel, nuts, black cherries, and plums. all that poop is really happening, not like how you read that poop in reviews and say "what the (frank) are they talking about?" to yourself with an incredulous look on your face and usually some weird hand gesture to go along with it.

it's 92 proof but the aforementioned softness just cancels that right on out and then some. it goes down like water. smooth as silk.

also, i don't remember what i paid but i don't think it was over $35 and that's a (frank)ing bargain around here. the kind the who sang about.

the name's got a cool little story to it as well which i'll let you read on the back of the bottle for yourself because that's part of the fun.

so this is a rousing success.

okay i got a bottle for christmas from an uncle. he's a great great guy. he would do anything for anybody. he just doesn't know a lot about whiskey. he drinks beer or seagrams & diet coke. and they were charging like 30-35 bucks for this so it isn't like he cheaped out and got us (he got kickbro one too) some $18 poop. he figured it was okay stuff. he meant well.

anyway, it's called bird dog and i'd never heard of it. and i guess i'm finally ready to try it 6 or 7 months later. i figured i worked a lot today and it'd be nice to get some rubbing alcohol in me if that's what it turns out to be.

anyway, as soon as i poured it i felt like i might be in trouble. it's so yellow. it's just so light.

i was so confident that i already had a beer poured and off to the side.

anyway this is the part where i'm supposed to do the big swerve and it turns out to be really good and it's a big success story with a moral about reading a book by its cover and all that bit.. it's practically an after school special. but i can't do that. that's just not the way the story goes.

it turns out it's 80 proof. i don't own any other bourbon that's 80 proof. i don't even know any other bourbon that's 80 proof off the top of my head. i mean, it made it real easy to drink. if that helps.

it's bourbon. it's absolutely bourbon. that's what it is. there's just nothing else going on with it. it's not unpleasant. it's just.. it passes so quickly. there's zero finish to it. and the taste is just so faint. all i can think of for comparisons sake is a light beer. like, it tastes like beer but it leaves you almost biting at the air for the rest of it.

i'll buy ginger ale and see if i can just do it mixed. i don't think it's bad enough to dump (and i'd feel bad) but i can't imagine drinking it ever with all of these other, better bourbons in the same cabinet with it.

just wanted to stop by to update the whole larceny situation.

the more i drink it the more i love it. it's half empty already. it calls to me. at some point almost every night i go to that cabinet for it. i'm actually not one hundo percent sure that i haven't gone to it every night since i've had it.

this is rocketing up the big board.

you may as well just go get it. at the very least i can guarantee you won't not like it. how's that? wait, did i even say that right?

i digress, it looks like it averages about 30 bucks when i look it up. so it's not like you're risking 60 bucks on a bottle.

really really happy with this.

guys, i don't even know what "big board" really means.

it just sounded douchey and pretentious and i wanted to use it.
