Recently purchased a bottle of this. I'm not really sure what to think. Definitely tastes more like scotch, get the sweetness from the sherry barrels for sure. I think this thing needed like another 5 years in the barrel to really find it's wheelhouse.

$90 here in ontario. which is overpriced i think.

while i'm at it (pay attention if you don't know what i'm talking about), i'm going to compare buffalo trace to larceny just because i like doing this kind of thing.

the buffalo trace is just like an old friend. it's just so god damned good. there's just so much going on. it's soft like a wheater but it apparently isn't. there's vanilla and toffee and caramel and barrel. i have also always gotten a bit of unsweetened iced tea from buffalo trace. not sure if anybody else gets that but me.

the larceny (which actually is a wheater) does hit you with the sweetness much sooner (immediately, actually) and you know about my sweet tooth. but that might not actually be 100% helpful because it's overpowering and it makes you have to search through it to find the complexity, where a bourbon like buffalo trace doesn't overwhelm you with any one aspect, letting you really indulge in all of them completely.

full disclosure, buffalo trace is my favorite everyday bourbon and a lot of you already know that. but i do like larceny a lot and i stayed as objective as somebody this drunk can be but buffalo trace still smashes larceny. i've never had them side by side like this and i am actually shocked by how much better buffalo trace is. i knew in my heart that it was better but it's like 5x better than larceny, which is crazy because i'm a sucker for a wheated bourbon.

bourbon has to be made in kentucky. whiskey has to be made in t-tennessee. scotch has to be made in scotland. champagne has to be made in illinois (not really).

does that say 117 proof? you got damn right it does.

i was gifted this bottle all the way from sunny florida because i don't see it on shelves around here yet.

anyway, it's as hot as you think it is. i usually let a few cubes melt a little in it. this is the barrel strength jawn though so i guess most of those are bringing the heat. it's nice though. there's caramel and cinnamon. i don't think as much vanilla as usual.

but i'm not gonna lie to you this stuff punches you in the mouth. i don't know if i'd call it harsh or even unpleasant or anything but it drinks much more like whiskey than bourbon. the sweetness is the only thing that lets you know it's bourbon.

i did recently read that there are apparently all kinds of distilleries making bourbon in texas, which seems against the whole "bourbon must be made in kentucky" law. this one however is actually distilled in kentucky so i guess that's alright.

there is also a small batch bottle that's a more earthly 90 proof if you're a total wussy. (i will probably buy the 90 proof if it ever comes to new jersey)

and that is all i know about devil's river texas bourbon whiskey. i'd have to make something up to tell you anymore.

big news.

a bottle of the holy grail has been located right within my very own family.

this was just found in aunt connie's OCMD house. uncle wayne had turned himself from nothing into a multi millionaire before cancer got him about 6 years ago. he always had great bottles of everything but somehow this was just uncovered. it is apparently being relocated to the NJ house and i will absolutely report back on its deliciousness.

there were text messages going back and forth about some $3000 bottle they just found and i had to explain to them that they were kind of holding the holy grail in their hands. i can't even believe i'm going to get to taste it.

the sad part is even though nobody has ever said "i bet peanut butter would be great with whiskey" people will snap this right up as if they've been waiting for this moment their entire lives.

i hate people. people are so dumb.

interesting is the word i'd use (in fact i just did). there's vanilla and i like that. i tasted a lot of cinnamon too. it's very light. wasn't much heat to it at all.

it's not amazing or anything but it's pretty good.

EDIT: i forgot to mention the sweetness. it might be in the top 10 sweetest tasting bourbons i've ever tried.
