To be fair, the biggest difference between "lockout" year Rinaldo and "brain transplant candidate" Rinaldo was that the former drew penalties at a far higher rate than the former.
- Jsaquella

For sure. Hopefully he can get back to that.

Its too bad, most of his big hits are clean, and he seems to get penalized for the result and reputation.

Last season he seemed to be going along well, and then would pull something mind numbingly stupid like jumping Roussell.

He is an excellent skater. Maybe he just has no hockey sense. We shall certainly see now.

For a week. That tells you theres nothing else to talk about.
Rinaldo has little impact on whether the Flyers succeed or fail.

- GOA88

What I find funny is that the two people on this board that actually don't mind the Rinaldo signing are making it a bigger deal then everyone else by complaining about hearing about it and stating everyone else is making a big deal over it. We must be reading different responses to the subject.

I think the debate is, more than anything, about the 'asset' aspect. Last year he regressed and was more of a detriment, so why the hurry to re-sign him?

I get the argument, but all we can do is wait and see.

- tangent_man

The signing scares people. It makes it seem like the team won't get rid of him no matter how poorly he plays. He never gets benched and earns an extension after a bad season.

Edirt: otoh, an extension could signify a trade is eminent

No poop. There's nothing else to discuss, so the minor re-signing of a 4th line goon will get over analyzed. Tired of it? Ignore it. I ignore people/topics that I don't find interesting.

He does get penalized for result and reputation, but he hasn't done enough to remove the reputation.

I don't mind the hitting and occasional bad penalty. I have a bigger issue with Rinaldo being a a bad player on top of being prone to bad penalties. He's not good defensively, he's not good offensively, he's just a guided missile that hasn't shown he can do anything more.

His icetime is certainly limited in certain game situations. I personally would like to see him scratched for a game or two, when he get's out of control like he has done in the past.

How do you bench someone when the line only played maybe 5-7 minutes a game. I think Berube has no problme benching or demoting players. Look what he did with players like Hartnell and Vinny. Also look how he rewarded a guy like Raffl.

I think it is hard to really say if Berube is a good coach. When taking over during the season it is hard to get your systems and lineup to what you really like. That's why this camp will be important. Plus he can really take a look at lines and see who compliments each other best. Tough to make those changes when your trying to get out of the whole they were in and dealing with the coaching change and system change.

I think he meant bench him for a game, as in a healthy scratch.

And you are correct. It doesn't seem to be a lack of a skill set that prevents him from being any of this IMO. It all comes back to his thought processes and (lack of?) hockey sense for me.

I frankly cant see how anyone who is as good a skater as him cant make himself in to a good defensive player unless he has nothing between the ears. Maybe getting a few years under his belt and getting a little older will help.

Either way, this is a make or break contract for a guy like him. Either he gets it together or he gets sent down.

I agree with it being a make or break contract for him. I would have preferred seeing the last year of his current contract being make or break. He's had three seasons with little improvement as a player-outside of the lockout season where he was more effective at drawing penalties. He didn't play better defense or score more, he drew more penalties.

His biggest issues are definitely between his ears, and the part that sucks is, he does want to get better and does work hard at practice and in terms of staying in shape.

The trouble is, he hits the ice in a game and all that goes by the way side when he has a chance to land a big hit. As good as he was at drawing penalties in 2013, it was just as easy for the majority of his career for opposing players to goad him into something dumb.

Coburn, Schenn and Streit.
- Jsaquella

Yeah, a few guys can technically play both (add Schultz in there, too), but Schenn's still the only natural right-sider in the bunch.
