Jan Levine: NHL Rule Changes for 2014-15; OT and Diving Penalties Two Keys
Some inetersting tweaks for this season... - airjan23
5k for getting caught diving 8 times.
Yeah that will put an end to diving. How will the fine be determined? By just getting a call for diving, or a video tape review. And what if a diving incident isnt caught by a ref, are they allowed to go back after the game is finished and fine a player?
I like the expansion of the trapezoid. It made it almost impossible for a goalie to pass to a forward who wasn't on the boards.
Also if I read it right, a puck off the crossbar or post out of play, the faceoff will remain in the zone. I really like this one. |

Hopefully a first step and then will rise next season. If they really wanted to crack down, give points for each dive. Once you accumulate a certain amount of points, you are suspended and lose a game's pay. |

I think the NHL needs to look into defensive players making blatant penalties with mere seconds left in OT to avoid a scoring chance |

I mean, if a coach starts getting fined I think he will start getting mad at said player |

Yea 5k is weak but if they get to 5k that means they already paid the 24k for the first 7 idives I guess. I think the CBA has a strict limit on how high fines can be and that limit is pretty low. I like that coaches get fined though. Michel Therrien will be the poorest coach by thanksgiving. |

I really don't like if a team causes puck to go out of play in offensive zone, the puck stays in same zone. if it's your fault that the puck went out of play, it should benefit the defensive team and move face-off to neutral zone. However, i did play goalie, so my opinion might be a little biased. and I've been saying that spin o rama should have been illegal forever. |

Not too far behind him will be Mike Johnston, new coach of Pittsburgh.
Their two best players flop, like they were hit in the back with a chair shot, at the mere sight of a stick coming near them. |

True, if they make it to 8 the total could be as much as 29k. But as a player if you think you could dive in the 3rd period of a tie game and sell the call, why the hell wouldn't you do it for a 5k fine after the fact. |

No spin-o-rama in the shootout is a pretty pointless rule. I'm one of the few people that still enjoy the shootout to end a REGULAR season game. I'd be supportive of KHL ice dance off if it was the only way to avoid a tie.
What does the coach not have to list 3 shooters for the shootout pertain too? Is the NHL adopting IIHF rule where after 3 round one shoot can go over and over? |

And no change to one of the most frustrating "grey area" plays in the game which affects pretty much every single team at one point or another. Goalie Interference when shoved by a defenseman. This is the biggest inconsistent call in the game, sometimes goals are waived off, sometimes they still count, sometimes the offense gets called for Goalie Interference, sometimes they don't, sometimes the defenseman gets called for crosschecking or interference, sometimes they move the faceoff to center ice....biggest grey area in the game that seems to change over and over again.
My memory of Lundqvist getting interferred with in the Finals and allowed that goal with Williams in front clearly preventing him from moving laterally. Goal still counted, LA gained all momentum, stormed back and won.... |

I agree with you. I really don't like that rule change. Indeed, I think a good percentage of these rule changes are pretty much pointless. I mean, is the spin-o-rama in the shootout really that much of a scorge on the game that they have to legislate against it? |

I think its about broadcast time, they have to dryscrape the ice before overtime which cuts into more network time, going directly into a shootout without having to wait the standard time they give coaches to submit their shooters just offsets that time. |

I think its a good idea to promote more offense. Technically, if the puck goes out of play because of a shot off the post or deflection, or any of the new reasons listed, the defending team doesn't have possession of the puck. I think its a good idea to give the offense a chance at keeping it in and not give it right to the defensive team. It will also cut down on neutral zone clogging play which too much of can cause a loss of flow and excitement in the game. |

It's just another way to discourage offense in the NHL.
I am one of those fans that thinks a high stick, knocking the puck into the net, should count. If a player skillfully bats a puck out of mid air, into the net, how is that disallowed? I completely understand disallowing pucks intentionally knocked in by a glove or a skate but a skilled use of a legal scoring object?
The NHL powers that be are doing their damndest to discourage skill in the game. No spin-a-rama in a shootout, why? Because it works and it's fun to watch, most likely. |

The high stick rule is to discourage players from violently waving their stick at head level in a heavy traffic area like the front of the net whenever the puck is high in the air. I can understand the logic for that one. |

High re-directions in front of a goalie?
That's skill and there's no swinging motion whatsoever but it is still a disallowed play. There's a lot of gray area for this rule but I think that is something to be looked at and modified. |

Guys will always push the limit though that's why the NHL has a black and white rule like nothing about the cross bar. That and you really want NHL refs using their judgement? |

I get league logic on this topic but it's just a shame to see the NHL be so quick to negate skill as much as they possibly can. |

I'm thinking more when the puck gets chipped high in the air. Like if the goalie makes a shoulder save and the puck flies 20 feet in the air. When it starts falling, you don't want an offensive player trying to swing that while theres a defenseman trying to body him, a goalie right there, etc. |
