MacDonald got that. Orpik got more.

Methot played 21:45 a game and was even on a bad defensive team while scoring 23 points. That's the market.

Marc Methot is asking for 5 per from Ottawa? what am I missing here? 5 mil?

Can you imagine what a presumably healthy Mark Staal will be asking for on the open market if the Rags can't lock him up this season?

$7 mill maybe. Defensemen prices are skyrocketing.

By next summer, I honestly think that $7M is where the discussion is going to begin, and it will end somewhere north of that.

FWIW, Staal is making $3.975M this season.

I this what you were referring to?

Probably. But if they were interested in trading with the Flyers, they probably would have been interested in finding another partner to trade up with

That's a bargain. Coburn's deal is essentially a bargain at this point. Eventually the prices will have to come down, no?

That's what I mean more or less. Eventually the will stop going up relatively speaking. The actual number will rise but the ratio of cap hit:salary cap will slow, stop or reverse. Otherwise teams won't be able to pay enough players.

I don't think the increasing top heaviness is going to stop soon, but at some point push has to come to shove

I really have no qualms about the 2014 and 2012 drafts... coming out w/ Laughts and Sanheim at those mid-late positions is pretty incredible.

2013... I think they could have gotten more there. If they really dead set on Morin, trade back. If not, they could have taken any number of players who were safer + higher ceiling guys: Zadorov, Morrissey, Mantha, Lazar, etc at #11.

- Tomahawk

And if Morin turns out to be a flat out stud?

The Flyers may have gotten the best player at that draft spot.

Forwards could become cheaper and goalies. Or players in general will be forced to sign lower contracts if they want to play in the NHL because teams simply won't be able to afford them.

Middle class of NHL players are going to feel the crunch most likely. And really what Columbus is trying to do is what every team should do. A player shouldn't make huge top money, when they're at the bridge deal level. That should come when they're closer to being eligible for free agency.

They had the agent on TSN radio and he basically said that they would be willing to sign long or short term at the right number but he's looking at the centers that were signed over the summer by contending teams and has used several of those as comparables. He isn't signing what he considers a bad bridge deal. Sounds like they're not close at all. Doesn't sound like he thinks all the sound bites from Columbus is a bad thing.

He implied there's no deal on the table above 3.5 per

- mayorofangrytown

That's a bit low in my opinion. I would be comfortable giving Johansen 2 years 8-9 million, 6 years 33 million, or 8 years 48-52 million.

I wouldn't swap Morin for Lazar or Zadorov. Mantha would be nice with our lack of wing prospects.
- Feanor

I dunno... both of those guys are coming off incredible breakout seasons. They're saying Lazar has a chance to make the Sens out of camp. Both guys are ahead of Morin on the dev curve already.

Johansen is nuts. He's had one good year. And now he thinks way too much of himself. I hope the Bluejackets stick to their guns.
- MBFlyerfan

Johansen isn't that nuts. Those long term offers are a bit light to be honest. And I don't entirely blame him for turning down 2 years @ 6 mil either... but he cant really expect to get any more than 8 at the very most.

He just finished his ELC. The offers Columbus has made are on par with the going rate. Johansson's agent has asked for twice as much.

I agree. What's wrong with 2 years and 6M? That's a pretty substantial bridge deal.
