When did we draft Zach Morris' kid brother? |

He could use more upper body strength. Looks boyish in that regard. - GOA88
He'll get there...he has a wide enough shoulder base that will be filled in over time. That will take years.... |

Honestly. He could fill out in a matter of months on the right training regimen. |

Thats the first thing I notice.. He is very square already. A strength and conditioning coaches dream.
If you cover his squirrely face, he looks pretty solid. |

Depends on what you consider filled out. If the general person on here thinks that he could look like the Hulk in 6 months of deidciated lifting then they are sadly mistaken given the length of his levers and torso.
Can he get materially larger and gain functional strength???....for sure! |

I wish Byfuglien was on the Flyers. He'd be their best dman by a country mile. - PLindbergh31
The only one I'd even offer as an argument would be Coburn, but they're different kinds of players.
For all his warts, Byfuglien is a top pair defenseman. None of the other Flyers defensemen, except maybe Coburn, can lay claim to that level of play. Maybe Del Zotto if he rebounds. |

Agreed. I give the nod to Byfuglien over Coburn. Coburn is better defensively, but Byfuglien is better offensively by leaps and bounds. Like you said they are different type of players. |

Coburn has not only seen more time as a top pair defenseman in his career, Coburn has seen more time as a defenseman then Byfuglien. To me, just because Byfuglien is the more offensive threat from the blue line, doesn't mean he's more likely a top defenseman then Coburn. In 2008 a long side Timonen, Coburn was amazing all the way up to the eastern conference final. Coburn was again amazing in 2010 being one of four defenseman who had to log heavy minutes because our third pair was that poor. I'm not even sure Byfuglien would make it here because of his conditioning alone. I think he'd get chewed up and spit out by management and the coaching staff, like Hartnell. |

Not a knock on Coburn, but Byfuglien puts up elite offensive numbers for a defenseman and is also very good in terms getting the puck up the ice and creating offense with his passing ability.
I'd take him, without question, over the rest of the defensemen the Flyers have. |

There are different types of defenseman that make up a team. And they're used in different roles, and different deployments. Now if you need an offensive defenseman, to play in a lot of neutral zone and offensive zone starts. And to play on the PP, then you would choose Byfuglien over Mark Streit, because he's better then Streit is. And right now, unless Del Zotto instantly reverts back to the way he played in 2011, Byfuglien is better then Del Zotto. And Byfuglien does put up elite offensive numbers. But that's where it ends. If you're actually looking for a defenseman to actually play defense, and to face tough matchups, against top competition. Then you don't want Byfuglien. And I'd choose Coburn, and MacDonald over Byfuglien. No question. Other then offensively, Byfuglien is just not that good of a defenseman.
And unless we can somehow get him to take a paycut, which can't happen, or that we can acquire him for nothing. I wouldn't take Byfuglien to replace Schenn or Grossmann either. As Byfuglien is not cut out for the roles that those players play. And there are other issues such as the cap to consider.
So stating that you would take him over the rest of the defenseman the Flyers have, isn't considering all the variables, in my opinion.
