Its going to take one person to say Giroux has a bit of an injury prone concern going into the future, and the masses will jump from cliffs. |

The Flyers' captain played in all 82 games last season and has not missed a game for Philadelphia in four of the last five campaigns. |

He's not injury prone during the season. Only in the off season and the pre season.

Status update: 84 on Med chem. Ceutics (the one that was crammed for in 8 hours) went surprisingly well today; no official grade yet. PnT on Tuesday. That's gonna be rough as hell.
Of course G gets injured 20 minutes into the camp. I'm sure it's not serious at all though, and 2 weeks is just being 100% precautionary/over the top at this point.
Can we trade Kimmo to a like the hawks at the deadline for cash? I want him to get a Cup. No (frank)ing fair.
Back to PnT for now. |

I'm sure the roids helped???? - hockeylover
Nope. It was a power train program in Manhiem! And I wasn't on any roids, unless you count pistachios and peanut butter and Kind Bars!
I trained next to Semyon Varlamov one day. He had a Beamer with a "Varly" plate and had custom Nikes with Varly on the back too |

Probably because it would be ridiculous, though great if you are applying for team negative, to say that a player who has missed 5 total games over the past 5 seasons should be mentioned anywhere in the same sentence with injury prone. |

Not a knock on Coburn, but Byfuglien puts up elite offensive numbers for a defenseman and is also very good in terms getting the puck up the ice and creating offense with his passing ability.
I'd take him, without question, over the rest of the defensemen the Flyers have. - Jsaquella
It's a great debate and if there were ever to be a divide in the room, you can make a case of both guys for being good at what they do but I myself with take Coburn every single time. |

In my opinion the Flyers could use another superstar to compliment Giroux. Most likely a star winger to play with Giroux. Now this isn't a knock against the rest of the team. I love the look and make of this team with a couple of exceptions but I think Giroux legacy would go a lot further with a gifted scorer on his left side along with Voracek. I have no doubt that Read, Schenn and Couturier will get better but in my opinion they stillnhave some maturing to do. Based on watched Richards, Carter and Gagne develop, anyone could make a case that this should be the season that one of these players breaks out. |

That's how fragile this team is seemingly perceived at the moment.
With Giroux, they're playoff contenders. Without G, they're frontrunners in the McDavid sweepstakes. |

I doubt anyone actually believes this.
Somebody did make a good point though. With this current roster if any two of these three went down for a significant period of time then the Flyers would almost certainly miss the playoffs. Giroux, Mason and Coburn(like him or not, no one we currently have is filling that void) |

I don't think they're runner ups for the first-round pick without Giroux, I just don't think they're a playoff team without Giroux. We've already lost Timonen's two way play and Hartnell's offense, which to me is a step back, even with replacing them both with Del Zotto and Umberger. Both new comers might be trying to reestablish their careers. It would seem nobody wanted Del Zotto and rumours have it that Umberger was inches away from being bought out. |

Nor do I.
But if Giroux would go down for an extended period of time, they'd be hard pressed to make the PO's. It would be incumbent on Coots and BSchenn to break out offensively. |

I'm gonna level with you guys. I don't think we've taken a huge step back this offseason but to me the product on the ice, on paper might have taken at least some steps back. There are some holes on this team. Not having Hartnell to play with Giroux to me is a big hole unfilled. Some of the Hartnell haters might be happy to see him go but for me, I think this team just becomes less entertaining. I'm gonna miss Hartnell rolling all over the ice like a tumble weed because he tripped or whifted on a slap shot. If we didn't re-sign Emery this season, I would have been pissed because you just never know when that guy is gonna take matters into his own hands. That three season run of a pretty good PP of Giroux, Timonen, Voracek, Simmonds and Hartnell is done. We might be better, we might be worse. I like Lecavalier but if there was a change to be made, that was it, especially with Laughton coming up. |

I think with a healthy Giroux that they're a likely wildcard team. If he's not healthy or if he's out of the line up for an extended period of time, they'll be hard pressed to make the playoffs.
It's not the end of the world if they miss the playoffs. They need to look at the long term, not trying to make an 8th seed a little bit better and be a 7th seed |

They tried to move Lecavalier. Nobody wanted him without the Flyers eating a ton of salary. If his awful season was the start of a decline, they won't be able to move him anyhow, unless it's via buy out.
I don't care that they traded Hartnell. The guy could score, but he was inconsistent, undisciplined and honestly, at this point was the 1st line LW by default. Trading him opened more opportunity for Schenn and Couturier, as well as Read and Simmonds.
The Flyers are now looking ahead, rather than dropping more assets and money into upgrading their mid tier team, they're going to try to build an elite one through the draft. They might not be as good in the short term, but they will very likely be better in the long term |

This is all great but we were looking ahead when we drafted Richards and Carter over ten years ago. We gave Richards the title of future captain before he deserved it. None of this resulted in a Cup. It's not like Lupul, Upshall, Hartnell, Coburn, Carle, Downie, Umberger and Parent were elderly. |

The problem with the Richards and Carter Era teams isn't that Richards was named the future captain before he deserved it, or was named captain too soon, it was impatient management/ownership.
They made a run to the ECF in 2008, took a step back in 2009, and decided that they were going all in on Pronger. It almost worked in 2010. Unfortunately it didn't and when their suspect goaltending reared it's head in 2011, on a mandate from Ed Snider, they went out and signed the biggest name goalie around, and then dumped Richards and Carter to help create cap room.
Holmgren decided to try and balance a re-tooling with remaining competitive. Then Pronger suffered his career ending injury, and Holmgren spent further draft choice assets to try and fill that gap. He traded two 2nd rounders, a 3rd and a 4th for Grossmann and Kubina. He traded JvR for Schenn. He risked losing 4 more first rounders to offer sheet Shea Weber. He traded additional picks for the rights to Streit and Bryzgalov
All those moves left them very short of draft choices. In all the years that Holmgren was the GM, he made three second round picks-Kevin Marshall, Anthony Stolarz and Robert Hagg. That's it. There were a couple drafts where the Flyers didn't even make a pick until the third round.
Rather than build a strong foundation, the Flyers used free agency and trading draft picks for immediate help. As we have learned, you don't use free agency to add cornerstone players. It doesn't work well in most cases, and in the cases it has worked, there's a very strong foundation to support them.
If Hextall sticks to his word, the Flyers will have a strong system and will use free agency to add secondary scoring or solid depth on defense until they are at the cusp of serious contention.
Adding a Bobby Ryan now, or really anyone who isn't a legit, 25 minute a night, all situations number one defenseman, doesn't make the Flyers a first tier contender along the lines of a LA or Chicago. I'm not suggesting a total rebuild, I'm suggesting what Hextall seems to be saying-compete while building a strong foundation, use trades and free agency to add the finishing touches and have a strong team that will be more like the Kings & Blackhawks, with multiple trips to the Final and not be a one and done team like the 2010 Flyers. |

Bobby Ryan to me isn't the end all, be all. I'd happily take JvR back or go for Evander Kane but Ryan just might be all that's out there as far as finishers who can keep up with Giroux, without giving up assets. Keep in mind Ryan is young then Matt Read. Ryan might be a one trick pony but the league is full of them. Always will be. To gather 20 players who play their perspective roles to a T to me is an unrealistic fantasy. |
