Easy man. The writer obviously is way-way-way biased. I'm not here to stir the pot. I'm calling for reality, that's it. I think Gagner is going to do fine in AZ. A perennial 40-50 pt scorer who plays bad defense, poor skating, but can show flashes. He very well may do great, a career change. But this guy is not a game-change, and he's not a 70 pt scorer- why? Because that's a 40% sudden, drastic, unheralded increase.
If you want to write a good article, write it with a brain. As someone said, gagner is a great top-6 forward for a bad team.
I decline the offer of writing for AZ, as even though I like the team and I like their grit, I think their jerseys are so-so. I preferred that mosaic green/tan/reddish thing that looked like Picasso made it.

Unheralded like Mogilny putting up 76 in '93? Almost double his previous year? Or unheralded like a kid enjoying Sesame Street in 2014?

For a 6th rounder it's a good pickup but I really doubt he's gonna crack 50 points |

The writer, biased or not, is doing his job. he's trying to spin a positive about this team. And don't try to deflect, you were not jesting him, you were trying to call him an idiot.

Good post.....but it is fun to rip on Tanner. - Jeropotato
(frank)ing right it is.
I'll even quote a quote i can't stand....
"100% bubba"
What I love about Tanner is he doesn't hide when he gets called out for his asinine predictions. He doesn't cry for people to be banned like some ex troll bloggers, and Tanner generally has a good sense of humor. He gets banged on hard, but takes it in stride.
BEsides, he doesn't play coy, as if he didn't know he just trolled harder than a crusty newfie auditioning for deadliest catch. |

I get the blog. It was a potential nhl player for the price of a 6th round pick. Maybe a change of environment and a winning system might spark something in gagner but c'mon, his blog title is totally trolling us. |

That is so unfair.
If you read what I say, I fully acknowledge the negatives. And I don`t claim hes going to be a star, just that he has more to offer. Obviously Don Maloney thinks so.
I don`t think it`s homerish to say a guy who hasn`t had one full 82 game season, who clearly has talent, and who is getting a fresh start stands a chance to finally succeed.
I even write the odds are against it happening.
This guy has - with everything going wrong for him - put up a constant 50 points. How is it a bad thing to think that if things go right for him, if he`s in a new situation that might be positive for him, that he could do better.
Also, I know that last sentence should end with a question mark, but I have suddenly turned my keyboard into a french keyboard and dont know how to get it back and all the buttons are now different. - James_Tanner
you make it seem like Gagner hasnt been given a fair shake...the guy has been a top 6 forward on Edmonton since he was 18 and could never get over that hump of being a 3rd liner who can put up some points.
by the way Gagner has never hit 50, so i dont know how you can call that "constant". He has averaged 42 points a year
edit: I like the pickup, I just think he will bring exactly what Ribiero did. I hope he can do better, because I have him in a couple deep keeper leagues |

Since we're on the topic of an intelligent rebuttal.....Mogilny scored 43pts in 1990,his rookie season, then 64 in 1991, 84 in 1992 and 127 in 1993. As you can see, substantial improvements every one of those seasons, I wouldn't exactly call that unheralded.
I won't comment on all the womb talk, it's kind of creepy though. |

Sam Gagner is in for a rude awakening as he is most likely more visible on his opponents' radar now that he's playing on a team with considerably less raw offensive talent than Edmonton. I say 14 Goals and 35 Points. It's like James never watched an Oilers game for the past few years. Not a knock against him, he just needs to realize that they only gave up a 6th rounder for this guy for a reason. |

Facts are facts. Gagner has never cracked 50 points. Sure there are reasons why a guy has an off year, but with Sam there was always something. Hope he does well but if he can't make it happen with Penner, Hemsky, Eberle or Hall on his wing there is no reason to believe he can get it done with the Ham and Eggers in Arizona. |

hey, this was a pretty all-round enjoyable comments section. But I'd just like to make one final point. While Gagner has a career high of 49 points, it must be noted that his career points per game average, when prorated for an 82 game season, is 50 points/year.
Now, if we consider, like old potato head says, that there's 'always something' I just don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that a change of scenery and a healthy season could see him improve on the 50 points he has been able to provide as a yearly guarantee.
The odds against a healthy season seem to be his biggest problem, but suggesting it could happen hardly seems like extreme homerism, since the math seems to suggest 70 points for Gagner is just a matter of injuries.
It'll be fun to watch and find out though. |
