I think junior players can play in the minors after the CHL season but Ghost and Hagg played in the NCAA and SHL, respectively so it wouldn't apply. - NickTheKid87
I know. I assumed the ATO could be used for the AHL or NHL. Obviously, collegiate players can't play until they've signed. I figured Junior players could get the 9 gamer at the beginning or end of the AHL season like they can in the NHL. |

CHL/NHL bylaws are convoluted as (frank)... hard to make heads or tails of who's eligible to do what, and when. |

I think the ATO has more to do with NHL teams getting to see if their junior prospects are NHL ready (if they're on the bubble) by giving them those 9 games without having to burn a year of their ELC. If this is the case, having ATOs apply to the AHL wouldn't accomplish much. |

Any truth to the fact that Hagg can "slide" if he plays in the AHL since he's 19? I thought only CHL players could slide, not so sure now. |

I thought the same, but it's purely an age thing. You just don't get many NCAA and Euro leaguers* coming under contract as U20's.
Edit: * - who are willing to play in the AHL |

I understand why the CHL does it though. At least they don't prevent kids from getting to the NHL when they're ready. It's just not the greatest tract for their development. |

So I turned off the game last night after the 2nd. Sounds like it was a good thing I did. It's nice to see hockey and some of our prospects but that schedule! Who the frank thought that one up...

Is Morin eligible to play in the AHL this year? The last page wasn't clear.

Not until his QMJHL season is over. He can then play out the remainder of the year on an ATO. So, for the most part, no, he is not eligible because he is not 20 yet. |

No. Not until his Junior season is complete. Once it's complete, he can join the Phantoms on an ATO |

I thought the CHL did it to protect the interests of their franchises, to be honest..... |

They do. It doesn't really hurt the player's development. I misspoke. It delays their development at times though. |

Straight out of fantasy land, but does anybody here think J Staal breaking his leg opens up a sliver of a chance for a Vinny trade? |

I doubt it. I think teams see the same things we do. |

The only ways I could see Vinny getting traded are
1) A team needs to get and stay at the cap floor by taking on his contract
2) A contender desperately needs a 2nd/3rd line center and elect to go with Vinny because all other options have been exhausted
3) He plays well to start this season (maybe 30+ points in the first half) and someone takes him
4) The Flyers eat half his salary
A combination of 2, 3 and 4 is the best chance of trading Vinny, IMO |

It seems the feeling w/ Flyers' brass on Morin is that 1) they have already determined he is going back to juniors to play his last year there and 2) it's still too early to know what kind of player Morin will eventually become (just a mobile stay-at-home defenseman or something more than that), so they want to be extra patient with him and see if he can really boost his numbers in his final junior year.
If Morin puts up close to a PPG in his last year in juniors, there is a better chance that he could be more than just a mobile stay-at-home defenseman at the NHL level. Not necessarily a good chance, but a better chance.
EDIT: In short, they might as well send him down prior to the start of the season, rather than keeping him around for a few NHL games |

I agree. I'm also fine with keeping Vinny for now. He's looked a bit quicker this pre-season than he did last year, but I suppose it's still early yet. |

Vinny for Liles... they'd actually save $500k in actual salary for the next couple of seasons, then they could take advantage of the $1.5M difference in cap-hit and salary for the remaining couple of seasons of Vinny's deal.
For the Flyers, it would be another Hartsy for Umberger kind of deal to get out of contract years.
I dunno, like I said, pure fantasy, and depends on how long Staal is out. |

Better to keep him, at least this year, than eat half his salary to trade him for pennies. |
