Yes. Lets do a few more years of sucking to build up talent. And for the existing young talent that might have to bare a few years of suckage I would just keep showing them one picture:

It's not that easy my friend- Yzerman made the NHL at 18 but didn't win a Stanley cup until he was in his 30's. That's a long time!!!! |

I ask you this (possibly a dumb question but, hey, just like Mr Booth, I'm at least consistent )
How would Yzerman be perceived today if he had not won a Stanley Cup? |

Probably similar to Linden, viewed as a god by local fans but seen as nothing special by other fans. Solid player, solid leader and a good person. |

It's funny because I went to think of a comparable player of that era who hadn't won a cup, and I couldn't think of a single one. Albeit I'm from a later generation, I think that's pretty telling about how we remember winners
Edit: Linden is a good one kneughter |

My thoughts as well. I can't think of a high end star that didn't ultimately win a cup at some point in their lives, during that era.
Good example with respect to Linden, Kneughter |

Its an interesting question, tough comparable
But he definitely wasn't viewed the same way until he won his cup... I think fans and the organization was getting impatient with him before that happened. |

I agree, it's a difficult assessment, and I would even go to the extent of possibly hindering the HOF status (that is, I think he'd get in but not on the very first ballot- correct me if I'm wrong). He did certainly back up his resume with some fantastic stats, so I am fairly certain there would be no question as to him being inducted. I'm just wondering if it would be with the same sort of fanfare and level of distinction had he not won the big one (both from a public perspective, - which can be nonsensically harsh in many of their assessments - and also from the media/hockey people, who can be fickle as well.
In my humble opinion, I would go so far as to say Stevie Y was within or very close to the Top 10 and definitely within the Top 20 of all time. |

Like Marcel Dionne- great player who played on a mediocre team. |

IMO Horvat had a stronger game. Not that I'm putting major stock into one pre-season game. |

Yzerman was much more of a high end player than Linden. However, I do think Linden had his leadership accolades far before Yzerman.
A guy that I would think of as a comparable to Yzerman without cups would be maybe Lafontaine ? |

Guys, I'm thinking if starting the draft through the message board on Fri morning, people can just post their picks as soon as they can. I'll update the draft order, players available and also make a post updating the draft picks as they're made. Hopefully we can get a round done every 2-3 days. Trades will be allowed during the draft as well.
(I'll email this message to everyone and on Carol's blog tomorrow). |

Finishing last, or near last, year after year after year is not something I'm down with. There are no guarantees with it, generational players aren't there to be had every draft.
Anaheim picked Perry and Getzlaf in the back half of the first round, they supplemented them with some other good picks but not first overall picks. Hopefully we get a few decent players like Virtanen, Horvat, Shinkaruk and McCann? |

I just want the standings posted on a regular basis so we'll know what one of you to call Mike Gillis. |
