But, to jump on the other side, you're basically using one of your 12 forwards as an insurance policy as opposed to player who can skate a regular shift.
The best solution is to have a veteran guy who can play a regular shift without hurting you, can handle any problems on the ice, and can chip in offensively. Flyers-era Brashear was a prime example of this guy. - jmatchett383
This is exactly what I was trying to say. Having a guy they can play regular shift and contribute in other ways in addition to providing a physical presence is the ideal |

No.
Scott went after Kessel despite the Leafs being loaded w/ truculence.
I don't recall anybody brazenly going after Datsyuk or Zetterberg like that despite the Wings choosing not to dress anybody more intimidating than Jordin Tootoo in recent years.

It's the ideal, but they're not quite a dime a dozen player. A guy like Prust is about the ideal player for the role. |

Emery made sure Holtby didn't take any liberties. He had to pay for all of those saves he made. |

Yes, but he still got cheapshotted and jumped from behind. Detroit responded to the Weber thing by dressing Bertuzzi who fought Weber. So there's your "enforcer" dressing a playoff game as a response. - jmatchett383
I'm guessing Weber and Malkin would have still done what they did (in the heat of the moment) without much consideration for potential retaliation on themselves, or their mates. |

Ryan White can do that to. Might not score as much but can provide energy, kill penalties, skate and also handle the knuckle stuff. I actually liked his signing as I thought he had more to offer than rinaldo and rosehill |

And that's the problem. Players can do things and not fear retribution anymore. |

Ryan White is not what I'd call ideal. He's really not that good. He's an uphgrade over Adam Hall, and that's about where it ends. Borderline healthy scratch. |

Maybe not, but if, in the next game, Bertuzzi came up behind Legwand or Erat and smashed his face into the glass, it may prevent future issues. |

I think that where you hope the league and officials will step in to police the players and legislate some of the more egregious shenanigans out of the game.
Weber should have been suspended for that thing... it was pretty indefensible. |

Yes, I love Weber but he deserved 2 games minimum. |

If he is not in the flyers plans, why did they issue him a qualifying offer?Laviolette actually used Gustafsson Quite a bit. I'm not saying he's a great player, but overall he played well enough when he got the chance to be in the flyers top sex last season. If you want to use coaching decisions as a justification, this is the same coach that decided to dress No Skill Hal Gill for a playoff game after he play four regular-season games - Jsaquella
it cost them nothing to qualify him. thats why. doesnt effect the balance of anything. as you said maybe they trade him later for an asset. him being qualified doesnt mean he is in their plans at all |

No idea why hockey players are expected to act like gang bangers -- downward spiral of retribution and all.
Naslund -> Steve Moore didn't really make the ice any safer for anyone. |

You just said an upgrade over adam hall but then said borderline healthy scratch. So which is it because Hall played 80 games last year. I know White might not be perfect. |

Because it's usually not cool with players if their star player goes down and their only reward is a 5 minute major.
Same reason why (some) families aren't happy when a person kills a loved one and the punishment is having to pay taxes for the next 30 years for that person to live. |

Adam Hall would be a healthy scratch on a team like Montreal. If you didn't realize, we had next to no forward depth last year. |
