There's no easy solution for the defense pairs. MacDonald is going to have to assume a role that's too big for him, or Del Zotto is going to have to. They can't pair Schenn and Grossmann unless they want Steve Mason to die from rubber poisoning.

I think to start, the best bet is to try MacDonald with Coburn, and hope that MacDonald can be a bit more aggressive in preventing carry-ins and not be such a passive neutral zone defender. Having a guy with the size and mobility of Coburn might make MacDonald more comfortable being aggressive than being with a guy like Luke Schenn who has positioning issues and is subpar in terms of mobility.

Del Zotto's inability to play RD pretty much eliminates Grossmann as a potential partner. With MacDonald playing with Coburn, that means he's with Schenn & leaves Streit with Big Nick.

At the very least they should be more mobile than the defense they iced for most of last season.
