Sounds too close to Yakupov. Doesn't backcheck. - jmatchett383
They need to end up on a line together: Yakupov/Yakimov/Joensuu. |

The overall problem is that a goon (enforcer, whatever) is not really a deterrent nowadays. Back when the Flyers had McCarthy or Brashear, the game was A BIT different where they could act as a deterrent. Not so much now.
As people have said, you need team toughness, not individual toughness. Even if the Sabres had Jon Scott, Lucic is still going to hit Miller. Okay, 5 minutes later Jon Scott will punch him a few times, and get Boston a PP for instigation and Scott will get 17 PIM. Now, if 5 guys are gonna pile onto you because they all have each others' back, no matter which 5 guys it is, that's a different matter. - jmatchett383
Goons stopped being a deterrent when coaches stopped using them to go after star players. When it simply became goon on goon violence, the only thing that was achieved was giving fans a little bit of a show. |

I dunno, in the wide majority of cases, if a player takes "liberties", he's the guy who has to answer for it personally... not his enforcer pal.
Take the Caps game for example... B Schenn's leaping hit on Hillen was paid for by Mitchell pasting Schenn into the boards later in the game... and Mitchell answered the bell by dropping the gloves w/ Brayden. There was no need for an enforcer there. The regular players on the ice could handle the situation and justice was meted out.
If the Caps tough guy grabs Schenn after the initial hit and pummels him instead, he's getting 2, 5 and 10 and the Caps are shorthanded. - Tomahawk
Who cares if you get a PP in the pre season? If an opposition meathead who isn't even going to be in the League, is trying to make a name for himself in the pre season, and is running around going after people, who do you want to stand up to him, and protect a teammate? Not one of your regulars. Because the problem is that players like Simmonds will do it. I'd rather have my meathead stand up to the other teams meathead, in a pre season situation. Regular season, is a different situation. Even then, I don't want a player who is a regular in the lineup, standing up to an opposition enforcer. |

with Valeri Vasilev getting so little ice time wouldn't it go to say he would be better off in NA playing a larger role with the Phantoms or Royals? |

Completely unrelated...
Name to watch: Bogdan Yakimov... 6'5 232, skilled C, probably going to make the Oilers out of camp. - Tomahawk
Will that keep Draisaitl off the roster? |

If Schenn didn't jump 84 inches into the air, there wouldn't be a problem. - jmatchett383
And it's a hockey play, and a different situation. |

Probably. Yakimov's a year older, and already has a year in the KHL under his belt. |

Part of the reason why there are still so many vets in camp is the sheer number of games in upcoming days.
However, as I mentioned in the blog, even when a player is cut from the NHL roster and sent to the AHL roster, he can still dress in an NHL preseason game if the team so desires.
Cousins had a decent camp but nothing that would make the organization think he's ready to leapfrog vets on the callup depth chart. Alt is going to skate on the Phantoms' top or second D pair with either Gostisbehere or Hägg and is arguably number nine on the NHL depth chart (behind the more seasoned Manning) right now. - bmeltzer
if you had to do an organizational depth chart for the D how would you rank them? |

Were Bodie, McLaren and Broll running around before Stortini squared off w/ them?

That's assuming he's interested in crossing the pond at all... his chances of making the Flyers are so slim, he might as well just stay at home, skip the culture shock, and take home the bigger (tax-free) paycheck. |

So the Flyers were close to trading for Kane in the off season according to TSN's Bob Mackenzie. He didn't mention who would be going back to the Jets, but there was interest from Hextall. Mackenzie is a reliable source. I just saw this on the " Broad street hockey" page.
I would love to have him, but of course at the right price!! |

Doesn't matter. It's there in case something happens. Sort of like 'break glass in case of emergency"
If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times. A very valid argument can be made that an enforcer is not needed. All you have to do is look back at last season, and see how many instances, the Flyers needed an enforcer. Not many! Some teams still want to carry one in case they feel that they'll need to insert the player in certain games where there might be some bad blood. Bottom line is, if the Flyers decide not to carry a player like Rosehill, or another enforcer, I'm okay with that. I'm okay also if they do carry Rosehill as a depth forward. |

Ironic thing is, Stortini was actually the guy doing all the running around:
When Rosehill is announced as part of the Flyers' 23-man opening night roster in 13 days, it will be for the type of game he played Tuesday night at Toronto's Air Canada Centre. He was the perfect juxtaposition to Stortini, made even more apparent by skating on the same line.
It wasn't so much about what Rosehill did, but what he didn't do - in a preseason tilt where fighting happens twice as often as the regular season. He didn't stir up any trouble.
Stortini was a wild man. He bloodied Toronto's David Broll with a distasteful late punch in the first period. He was given two 10-minute misconducts in the game, in addition to two minor penalties. In all, he ended the night with 29 penalty minutes, even though he was on the ice for just 7 minutes and 30 seconds.
For Rosehill, there was no need for trouble Tuesday night. No liberties were being taken against his teammates and Rosehill doesn't see much sense in "staged" fights.

As for Rosehill, the thing that keeps him in the league more than anything else is his ability to practice as a dman. |

People tend to lump all enforcers into the same group. Stortini and Rosehill are a great example. If I were Hextall and I had to choose between Stortini and Rosehill, I would be taking Rosehill all day. Rosehill can manage a regular 4th line shift. |

I wonder who they wanted. My money is on Couts, Ghost, Morin and/or BSchenn. Of course Plus was probably involved as he always seems to be... |

teams want talent. simple as that. yet not 1 team wanted hm or at least that is who it seems. if he was good enough he would be in the nhl right now not russia
so where did you see that ghost was available in rd 3 becuase of his size? you really think that was the main reason he was drafted in the 3rd rd? how much has he grown since he was drafted? - rinaldo
Won't they have to offer sheet him since he is technically a Flyers RFA? |

Stortini is actually a relatively skilled hockey player, and I'm guessing that's why Hexy brought him in. His problem has always been that he gets tuned in fights a lot and his skating stride is glacial. His hands and two-way sense are above avg for a goon. |

He has 15 points in his last 146 games. Not exactly a great player.
EDIT: That is in the AHL btw. |
