Boston still has to sign or trade Smith and Krug though. They'll have to move someone. - KB3Point0
Boston has over 4m coming off the books on day one when Savard goes on LTIR. Those players won't cost that much. |

I've got him in our hockey pool so I hope he makes it. - LeftCoaster
Now that's a bold move |

Islanders STILL paying Yashin this year ?? - LeftCoaster
Well at least it's just money. Good thing they didn't give up much in the way of players for him too... |

I can't believe Pronger is still on Philly's active roster. Obviously for insurance reasons but he'll never play another NHL game again. |

They're $800k over though. after the $4M comes off that's only $3.2M to sign those two. No way they fit them both in under that. |

Pretty crazy that Pronger's career ending concussion came from a puck too. We see concussions in hockey all the time, but very rarely from the puck. |

I believe if he retires they don't have to pay him, thus he stays on the LTIR. |

Philadelphia, Chicago, Tampa Bay & Boston all over the cap still.
Boston and Philly can put Savard & Pronger on LTIR on day one of the season, which gives them some room but they're still over the cap for one day, which means small fines. - LeftCoaster
Three out of the four teams you listed probably wouldn't deal with the canucks.
TB being the exception. |

Interesting comments on 1040 this morning from the guy who wrote the book about the Gillis era in Vancouver. Said Hodgson thought he deserved more ice time than the Sedins and Kesler. Said he's all about himself and he doesn't think he'll ever develop into the star he could have because he's all "me, me, me."
AV broke him. |

Why wouldn't Philly deal with Vancouver? Or Boston? Or even Chicago at this point? |

He got an eye injury as well. I guess he suffers with vision impairment to boot. The guy is a walking infirmary. |

Bad blood?
Just seems NHL GMs hold grudges. Kind of like the 'won't trade within conference' code. I don't understand it but it seems to hold up. To me a good trade is a good trade no matter who is dealing. |

I don't see why that would be the case we have a rookie GM |

did you catch the leafs thread this morning? Oh man was it a-buzzing. I can't stand the guy. I don't think there is any room in hockey for kicking with the skate or stomping on another player's leg with a skate. Those are career enders and Pronger was more than happy to do it.
The (frank)er can rot in hell for all I care. |

Agreed. Also, Boston might be more inclined to deal with Vancouver because of Benning being there. |

Philly has no reason to have bad blood. Neither does Boston. In fact, I'd say that Boston is more likely to trade with the Canucks now that Benning's in charge. The Canucks - Blackhawks rivalry is dead. They haven't played in the playoffs in 4 seasons. Aren't really competing at this point. |

Not really about our GM. More to do with other GMs. After the Philly's qualifying offer to Kesler and Nonis 'Clark would throw his grandmother under the bus' comment just doesn't seem there's been a relationship between the two clubs since.
Boston and Vancouver franchises went through an on-ice (and off ice) war not too long ago. Lots of nasty things were said. Even if Benning is an ex-bruin I don't see the two dealing.
Chicago is obvious. If they couldn't work out a deal for Kesler (even at such a low asking price) then it must have something to do with bad blood. |

I think you put too much weight on the logo and not enough on the actual management team. At the base of it, it is just one middle aged dude phoning other middle aged dudes |

ya I saw it, they're touchy over there. I think Pronger was one of the biggest d!cks to ever play the game, but, I could hardly care about that poope. Hard to argue he wasn't one of the best dmen over his career in the NHL.
Every team he went to got better immediately...even the frickin OILERS???
We played the game the same way, sans the kicking, except you know, he was good and I wasn't. - LeftCoaster
I would take Scott Niedermayer any day of the week over Pronger.
He did change the complexity of the teams he played for but the same could be said about Dustin Penner. He's won three stanley cups with three different teams. The oilers being the only exception and he got close with them. Optics can be deceiving.
But yes Pronger was one of the best. |

We'll see. Personally, I think a gm would have to be a moron to automatically not deal with certain teams out of principle. As for Chicago, I don't think that Kesler was ever an option. They might have been able to make the cap work this season, but not next season when Kane and Toew's new contracts kick in. |

Actually this raises a good question: Who are the top 5 defenceman of all time? Top 15 if you want to include Pronger. |
