We'll see. Personally, I think a gm would have to be a moron to automatically not deal with certain teams out of principle. As for Chicago, I don't think that Kesler was ever an option. They might have been able to make the cap work this season, but not next season when Kane and Toew's new contracts kick in. - CubanBuffet

Actually this raises a good question: Who are the top 5 defenceman of all time? Top 15 if you want to include Pronger. - bloatedmosquito
On the Toronto Maple Leafs or the NHL? |

That's why I said to 15 because 1 - 6 spots already taken by current Leaf blue liners. |

I would take Scott Niedermayer any day of the week over Pronger.
He did change the complexity of the teams he played for but the same could be said about Dustin Penner. He's won three stanley cups with three different teams. The oilers being the only exception and he got close with them. Optics can be deceiving.
But yes Pronger was one of the best. - bloatedmosquito
Scotty Neidermayer was excellent, no question, different style of game. Penner won two Cups, not three, he was just lucky he was put into great circumstances with very good teams. He did play well in the playoffs though.
Pronger on the other hand played well...always, Hart Trophy, Norris Trophy, Stanley Cup, 700 career points for a dman, +190 for his career, Olympic Gold Medal, etc etc.
Yep - one of the best ever!! |

Philly has no reason to have bad blood. Neither does Boston. In fact, I'd say that Boston is more likely to trade with the Canucks now that Benning's in charge. The Canucks - Blackhawks rivalry is dead. They haven't played in the playoffs in 4 seasons. Aren't really competing at this point. - KB3Point0
What are you doing in here? Go pick Crosby already.. |

I don't like these questions, it's too difficult to compare across generations considering how much changes WRT the game. You can go by who dominated their respective eras but even then you end up with the problem of maybe there was more than one guy in that era does that make either of the defensemen any less dominant than those who had no competition? If you go by Norris trophies then:
1. Bobby Orr (8)
T2. Nicklas Lidstrom (7)
T2. Doug Harvey (7)
4. Ray Bourque (5)
T5. Pierre Pilote, Paul Coffey, Chris Chelios, Denis Potvin (3) |

That brings up a good question. How would you compare Chelios vs Pronger? I would automatically say Pronger but then I would be arguing against actual NHL people who should know way more than I do.
Based on Norris trophies, Pronger is far down the list of "greats". |

I only really ever saw Chris Chelios as an old man relatively speaking, but he was a force even in his forties, and he was absolutely a winner. I feel like I would give Chelios a slight edge
Edit: I still remember him and Bert parked in front of the net and him calling Bert a fat ass the whole time also of note he was probably my most hated player as a kid |

It's hard to say. Chelios won more Norris trophies but Pronger was a more dominant D IMO. |

Never saw him play - growing up in the 70's & 80's he was done. Just going on the players I've seen play. |

Waived Jacob Markstrom about to get real-time career evaluation. Surely he's better than some of 30 backups. 1 yr left at $1.4, then RFA
