I can't stand being in cars with drivers like that. She loved her car too, defended the purchase for 2 years before I bought a Highlander. Then she wanted me to drive it.

Actually, in hindsight, most comparable models (subcompact) of that time period were no different when it came to fatalities due to crashes resulting in fire. Pinto fatality rates were similar to the AMC Gremlin and Chevrolet Vega, as well as imports like the Datsun 510. The rate was even lower than the VW Beetle, Toyota Corolla, and Datsun 210.

The Pinto got the notoriously bad reputation due to a number of reasons: The publicity of a Ford memo about shortcomings of its fuel system (now known as the Pinto Memo) being carelessly leaked, as well as well-known advocates like Ralph Nader getting involved with the ensuing NHTSA investigations. But Ford's biggest blunder was its active efforts at dodging any voluntary recalls. Not even lawsuits changed their refusal to issue them. It wasn't until the NHTSA was about to issue a formal mandatory recall order that Ford began a voluntary recall campaign.

It's important to note that the federal regulations concerning standards for fuel system safety and testing were radically changing during the early 70s, and it caused considerable confusion among the auto makers. The confusion was compounded due to being given exceptions on a vehicular basis to the changing regulations.

agrEEd. there's a crease down the side of the car that runs all the way from the front, under the side windows, and runs up along the rear side glass where it meets a strange straight piece. this can be any number of model year gremlins. there could be a corporate cousin that we're not aware of though. like how sometimes the chevy chevette was a pontiac 1000 and the ford escort was a mercury lynx.

I still suspect some considerable customization, particularly because the front looks so odd with the light arrangement, so the exact year might remain a SWAG without a more detailed look. Daeth needs to get more pics.

i'm not sure but i think what's going on here is the entire grill is ripped off and there are some pep boys aftermarket fog lights slapped on.

You're likely right. I was discounting it being a later (77-78) version, which have the distinctive sloping hood compared to the noticeably flatter hood of the 76 and prior years, because these same later versions also have a body-color-matching section between the grill and bumper in the front. But in looking at some example closeup photos after an additional search, it looks like that's just a bolt-on panel that can be just as easily removed as the grill. No cutting/chopping. But the turn signal lights are also aftermarket, rather than the originals being there with just an additional pair aftermarket fog lamps slapped on by themselves.
