Re-reading the Acton-Peeters deal made me look up the 1989-90 Flyers. Holy cow. - Jsaquella
f'ng mess, thus ushering in the dark age, which coincided with my heading off to college in vermont. it was like the flyers didn't exist, except for what i could catch via hockey night in canada broadcasts. |

Even 25 years ago the flyers were circumventing the rules. When is chris pronger playing again or will it be another year on LTIR. What a fraud, yet somehow its the devils who were circumventing the rules with the kovy deal? - devfan30
yes, it is somehow the devils who were circumventing the rules. |

Yup, him and Propp both. Propp also, IIRC, played in the finals with Minnesota in 91. - BiggE
the rapid deconstruction of the mid 80s teams was heart wrenching. one by one...and then when ilkka got moved...just, ugh...... |

Ya know, I really don't like that they didn't let Brodeur stay in the org at least as the backup.. He wanted to get to 700 wins, which to me is not unreasonable, and they sent him packing. - Hextall271
devils fans practically hate brodeur at this point. it's mind boggling. |

I have no idea why. Although NJ is a div rival, I have always had a great respect for Brodeur. He's one of the best ever IMO. NJ should have just signed him to backup and allowed him to get to 700 wins then retire with dignity. Now, He might end up playing in another jersey this year which would look insanely weird. NJ isn't a contender who is one player away from a run. |

i understand an organization needing to move on, and that time has come in nj. i don't feel the owe brodeur anything, honestly. it doesn't seem like any other club has interest in brodeur, which surprises me to some degree. i think he can still play, but not as a starter. it would be weird to see him in another sweater.
what i don't get is the devils fans disdain for him. they just want him to go away. |

That was bogus, but 90% of the penalty for signing Kovalchuk to the deal was wiped out by the NHL.

A lot of Devils fans feel his demand to play so much last year cost them a playoff spot. It's a fair argument, IMO. Brodeur was below average last year and Schneider was very good. Starting the kid maybe 10 more games might give them enough points to slip in. |

yeah, i know. BUT...
if that team goes 5-8 in the shootout instead of an absolutely beyond unacceptable 0-13, they get in.
i won't blame marty for their playoff absence. it's not like that were a very good team anyway. instead of poopting on the best and most valuable player the organization has ever had and a huge reason why they have the 3 cups they have, how about you appreciate him on his way out. just one more reason i hate those (frank)ing "fans". the worst. |

Would have been fine with them moving guys for younger players, prospects and/or picks; it was how Keith Allen kept them competitive for so long. However letting a guy like Pelle Eklund go for nothing and trading Poulin for Ken Linseman were just flat out dumb moves. |

philly fans are tough, no doubt, and deserve some of their bad reputation, regardless of sport. i can guarantee you though, that if he were a flyer, the sentiment would be different. philly fans love their true stars to the end - like dawkins for example. |

i wouldn't have minded either. 24 is way too young to give up on a solid goalie prospect...especially one coming out of the florida system. |

Why would come on here just to embarrass yourself by displaying how ignorant you are about the CBA? There is no circumvention. Go whine on the Bruins board about Savard being on LTIR. |

The original 17 year deal they signed with six phony seasons tacked on at the end deserved punishment. Lou ignored the warnings and screwed his team. Lots of great talent at #11, not so much at #30. |

every athlete's different. howard also hasn't performed at a brodeur-like level from season to season even from the beginning, and has had all kinds of injury problems. brodeur was an iron man, year after year, and did his job well. i don't see them as comparable, but i understand your point.
imagine if bernie, pelle, or hextall had been able to perform like brodeur for the same length of time? and yet they still are revered as if they did. |
