Deeper team overall. The blueline depth is just one example.
The Flyers were/are a mediocre 5 on 5 team. They live and die on special teams. New York was better at 5 on 5 all year, as well as in the playoffs. That was in part because they had useful, effective players on their fourth line.
Guys like Brian Boyle and Dominic Moore, and to be quite honest, Carcillo and Dorsett, who were a lot more effective than the Flyers energy players - Jsaquella
Again 5 on 5 comes back to effort and desire. The flyers have plenty of skill up front to get it done.

I made a peanut butter sandwich out of two cherry Poptarts.

Here's something: s'mores but made in the microwave. Delicious although you don't get the smokey flavor. - NickTheKid87
Sounds good. I usually like grilled peanut butter and jelly but I didn't have the time. I did toast the Poptarts though. |

Just edit out the second period from the broadcast, and the Flyers will win 1-0 to advance to round 2 - bmeltzer
interesting for me to rewatch it... i'm so freaked out watching playoff games live i don't process it very well
the flyers were way more competitive than i thought (especially the aforementioned third period)
and streit was their best player

I really wish that were true. I think effort and desire are factors that lift a team over the top, and makes a good team better. But it can only take you so far. But I think that talent with effort and desire behind it, beats just talent, for sure. But that series came down to a lot of things, then just talent and desire. |

Nope, the Rangers wanted it more.
Streit's talents are a key reason why the Flyers played as well as they did last season. |

It was just an absolute abysmal 2nd period. Wouldn't want to watch it again. |

Wayne Gretzky was an awesome player, couldn't coach worth a poop. Lappy's far from a proven coach, much as I like the guy. - Jsaquella
I find that the most talented players often don't make great coaches (there are of course always exceptions). How do you teach someone to breathe? Or see? If it's natural to you then it's really, really hard to describe/teach. The people who had to fight to learn something and train themselves mind and body day after day are the ones who make great coaches.
OMG. Rinaldo the assistant coach, lmao...

Skill w/Superior Effort > Skill
Skill w/o Effort > Effort w/o Skill
Effort is the pendulum on which victory swings when all things are equal. However, things are rarely, if ever, equal. Otherwise, most ECHL players would be in training camps right now because I'm sure they'd relish the opportunity to challenge for an NHL spot. They just don't have adequate skill. |

you could very easily take #36 off the jersey and apply #10 on that hit.

Absolutely. I'd love to see Gretzky try to show a player how to be as good as he was:
"Come on, dammit, can't you just anticipate where they play is going to be 3 seconds before it happens, get to that area, stickhandle around 2 guys and make a perfect saucer pass to a wide-open teammate for a goal!?!?" |

That's little more than a hackneyed cliche. You can have 5 guys busting their asses at cross purposes and you won't win. 5 guys working their asses off as a unit is far better.
The Flyers lacked cohesion, not effort.
Basically my issue with Rinaldo in a nutshell. The effort will be there, for sure. But if that effort end is aimed poorly, it's not worth a bucket of piss in a rowboat full of leaks |
