That's little more than a hackneyed cliche. You can have 5 guys busting their asses at cross purposes and you won't win. 5 guys working their asses off as a unit is far better.

The Flyers lacked cohesion, not effort.

Basically my issue with Rinaldo in a nutshell. The effort will be there, for sure. But if that effort end is aimed poorly, it's not worth a bucket of piss in a rowboat full of leaks

It's no more a cliche than saying they lacked cohesion. Btw loved the rowboat full of leaks thingie... Bravo

Absolutely they have talent. But they didn't play well at ES overall in the series.
- MJL

And that's why I think a guy like hartnell was traded... I absolutely loved hartnell's body of work but his effort tapered off in the end.

Actually, it is. When you have poor gap control and bad puck support, and can't counter what the opposing team is doing, that's poor cohesion. When a guy tries to clear the puck up the wall and winger skated away seconds before, it not lack of work, it's not being on the same page.

I personally never questioned Hartnell's effort. Just sometimes where his effort was directed. I think in a lot of ways, Hartnell was an enigma on this team.

Zherdev is more skilled and talented then you are that's for sure. But he couldn't spell effort.

So, I know you hate to deal in hypotheticals, but which of us would you surmise would be better at professional ice hockey?

Don't ya think at this level, players should do these simple things without coaching?

Been waiting for them to call my name. Can't seem to leapfrog stortini on the depth chart. Hearing I need "a little more Rinaldo" in me if I expect to crack the lineup

A standard one on one hockey contest. I guess you both get one of those tie up goalies (see: figure 1.1) or something. Standard 1v1 rules apply.

Cohesion is required to win, otherwise you've got a team playing shinny against a team playing a designed system. You can work as hard as you want with all the skill in the world, but unless every one of your players is able to do an end-to-end rush and beat the goalie every single shift, you won't win. That's why the Soviet Red Army always beat the NHL All Stars in any one-game exhibition. The NHL All Stars didn't lack talent or effort, but they didn't play a system like the Red Army team did. The NHLers were unfamiliar with each other and were basically playing a game of highly-skilled shinny where as the Red Army team used that skill within a system which they had basically perfected.

It depends on the system and the players. Laviolette, in 12-13, was using a system that didn't fit his players strengths the way in did in 09/10 and 10/11. Berube changed the system when he came in and the players sort of bought into it. So, no, not really. Otherwise, you'd argue the coach is inconsequential to a team.

If it was that simple, why have a coach? I didn't question the effort, last year in playoffs, I questioned why they still had issues with gap control & why there was no effective counter for the Rangers forechecking.

It's not easy to generate chances when you're spending a lot of time and energy in your own end.

I just got the call. I had to promise to try really hard and spark endless debate. I'm going to do my best.

Also, Rinaldo and his stick better stay on his side of the ice

Dude, I'll try so much harder than you. You'll never be more than a 2nd line 40-goal scoring winger. I, myself, will be stealing all of Akeson's Art Ross Trophies with my effort.

I even have a pair of skates and a stick.

You're on ice skates and playing on an ice rink
Neither of you are allowed to commit penalties

Well, being as we are basically relying on pure puck and skating skills, then yes, he would absolutely dominate me. My skating is inferior to his to an extent that I will never even be able to get near him (but I'll try REEEEEEEEAAAALLLLLy hard).

My only hope would to be to commit a penalty which would take him out of the game. So, yeah, he's better than me.

good answer, bo.

i played my best game in probably 3 years last night, 2nd of a double header. 1 goal allowed (rebound off a breakaway, and i still got a piece of it), roughly 50 shots against.
